Posted Dec 31/12 - Pflugerville (23-0) earns KSA Holiday Tournament title in elite division, stops Oak Ridge (Calif.) 62-48 in championship game; senior Amy Staha (15 points) earns MVP honors

ORLANDO, FLORIDA- Behind senior guard and team MVP Amy Staha's 15 points and three other double-figure scorers, the nationally-ranked Pflugerville Panthers earned the 2012 KSA Holiday Tournament championship in the elite girls division with a 62-48 victory over Oak Ridge from El Dorado Hills, Calif. on Monday afternoon.

The win moves Pflugerville to 23-0 as the Panthers held the Trojans at bay by dominating on the boards by holding a 44-21 rebounding advantage - and by forcing 19 Oak Ridge turnovers. Oak Ridge, which plays in California's large-school division, is now 10-2. Prior to the loss to P'ville, Oak Ridge's lone loss was to the nation's No. 1 ranked team - California's Mater Dei - in November.

Joining Staha in double figure scoring were senior guard Brenisha Payne (12 points), senior forward Diana Omozee (12 points) and junior guard Alyssa Echols (11). Senior point guard Taylor Ross (five points) added game-highs of nine rebounds and eight assists. Staha and Omozee each pulled down eight rebounds and Staha and Echols each had three steals.

Pflugerville led by double-digits in the first half before the Trojans cut the lead to nine, 43-34, at the end of the third quarter by sinking six free throws in the final 1:30. That was as close as Oak Ridge would get as Staha opened fourth quarter scoring with a three-pointers from the baseline to give P'ville a 46-34 edge. Then, Oak Ridge got as close as they would get following a layup (46-36) before Staha nailed another 3-pointer to push the lead back to 13 (49-36) with 5:31 to go.

In the junior varsity tournament bracket, Pflugerville ran the table, going 3-0 and finishing play with a 66-20 win over Manalopan (NJ) Monday afternoon. Freshman post Alexis Bryant finished with a game-high 18 points, and was named P'ville's MPV of the tourney. Joining her in double-figure scoring were freshman guard Mykiel Burleson (16 points) and junior guard Kiara Sloan (12 points).

All Pflugerville teams are back in action on Wednesday, Jan. 2 when they travel to Rock Round HS for District 16-5A action. The varsity game tips at 7 p.m. and will be proceeded by the junior varsity and freshman Gold team games (5:30 p.m.); the freshman Blue game will be played at 7 p.m. along with the varsity contest.
