Posted Dec 13/13 - Cards Use Huge 2nd and 3rd Frames to Blowout Crosstown Rivals

The first Battle of the Birds of the 2013-14 season ended in an 81-44 blowout of Campbellsville by the home Cards. Campbellsville controlled the tempo and made the game sloppy, resulting in a tie at 15 after the first quarter. With the start of the second quarter, Richard Gatewood's squad picked up the pace and jumped out to a sizable lead. The second quarter marked the return of forward Caleb Wigginton from injury and the senior did not disappoint. After scoring his first basket of the season off of a lay-up, Wigginton flushed away a missed lay-up on the fast break that changed the scope of the game. Using a 27-point second quarter and a 25-point third quarter, the Cardinals wrapped the game up quickly. Guards Quentin Goodin and Brady Turpin led the Cards in scoring with 16 apiece, while guard David Sloan contributed 15.  Wigginton scored 12 in his return and freshman Ezra Oliver also added 11, giving the Cards five double digit scorers. Turpin, however, stole the show as the senior guard came off the bench knocking down 4 of 5 from deep, assisting on 5 baskets, and stripping the ball 4 times. The 81-44 victory is the first win for Coach Richard Gatewood in the series. The Cardinals will continue district play tonight at Adair County at 8 ET.
