Posted Dec 29/13 - Cards Bounce Back For 5th Place Finish in CHS Holiday Classic

After dropping the first round game of the CHS Holiday Classic against Holy Cross of Louisville, the Cards recovered to triumph over Butler County and Washington County to finish 5th place in the tournament. The Cardinals (9-3) played the tournament without starting guard David Sloan, who is still recovering from an ankle injury that has sidelined Sloan six of the last seven games. In their first round loss to Holy Cross, forward Caleb Wigginton racked up 23 points on 10 of 17 shooting while guard Quentin Goodin scored 20 points and dished out 11 assists. Freshmen guards Ezra Oliver and Tyler Franklin provided a lift as well, as the guards combined for 16 points and 5 steals. The Cards looked flat in their 72-66 defeat and were outrebounded by the smaller Holy Cross. The Cards bounced back the next afternoon with a 91-81 victory over Butler County. Wigginton and Goodin tallied 30 points a piece, season-highs for both. Wigginton came close to a double-double, pulling down 9 rebounds while Goodin also added 7 rebounds and 5 assists to his stuffed stat line. Oliver contributed 14 points and 6 rebounds and forward Austin Webster recorded 11 points. In the third day of action, the Cardinals faced Washington County, in a rematch of the first game of the season. The 5th place game was slightly closer than the 58-point drubbing from earlier in the season, but the Cards displayed the same dominance. Goodin led the Cards in scoring with 19 points while Wigginton accounted for 17 points and 6 rebounds. Webster narrowly missed another double-double for the season, scoring 9 points and pulling down 9 rebounds. Guard Brady Turpin added 7 points and Oliver assisted on 6 baskets. With the 63-40 win, the Cards moved to 9-3 on the season. Goodin was named to the All-Tournament team and Wigginton was selected for the All-Academic team. The Cardinals will continue action against the Elizabethtown Panthers in the first game of 2014 on January 2 at 7:30.
