Even a steady rainfall and three games in a day couldn’t stop the Douglas College Royals baseball team from sweeping the Shoreline Dolphins this past weekend.
On a wet rainy Saturday at Whalley Ballpark, the Royals were able to get in a game and a half before the rain halted the second game in the 4th inning.
In game 1 of the double header, the Royals were able to come from behind to beat the Dolphins by a score of 6-4. The big blow for the Dolphins came in the 5th inning where Royals third baseman Jordan Kornberger launched a 3 run homerun over the left field fence. Jeff Bouchard also helped the offense going 2-4 with 2 RBI’s including a double. Tyler Yorko also had a good day at the plate going 2-4 with a double. Matt Trimble picked up the win for the Royals going 5 2/3 innings while striking out 8 Dolphin batters. Eric Kahl picked up the final 4 outs earning his 2nd save of the year.
In game 2 the Royals sent out Brandon Chernoff to quiet the Shoreline offense and he did just that. Chernoff was cruising through 4 innings giving up 0 runs, before the field became unplayable and had to be stopped and continued the next day at Shoreline’s field. The Royals then sent out Jack Bale to continue on Chernoff’s success and he did throwing the final 5 innings of shutout ball to give the Royals baseball team the 5-0 shutout. It was a more balanced attack for the Royals offensively with 7 different Royals getting hits. They got RBI’s from Jackson Temple, Brayden Munro, and Colby Rossi.
Game 3 was another close game with Douglas College coming out on top 5-3. Tanner Robertson led the offense, going 2-3 with a triple and a walk and 3 runs scored. Temple and Kornberger had 2 hits each with Temple picking up 2 RBI’s as well. Shawn Andersen picked up the win for the Royals going 5 2/3 innings giving up only 2 earned runs. Josh Yung battled some control issues by getting out of a jam in the bottom of the 6th inning with a fly ball to Robertson in center field to end the inning. Eric Kahl picked up his second save of the series and third of the year pitching a scoreless 7th inning.
The offense kept the ball rolling in game 4, pounding out 12 hits including 5 extra base hits, leading the Royals to the 8-1 win and a sweep of the Dolphins. Jared Frew, Garrett Belanger, Mike Orosz, Colby Rossi, and Tanner Robertson had 2 hits a piece with Rossi and Frew picking up 2 RBI’s each. Robertson, Frew, Munro, Orosz all had doubles with Rossi producing a triple as well. Jamie Whitehead pitched well again going 6 strong innings giving up 1 run on 5 hits while striking out 5 batters earning the win. Doug Strohan pitched 2 solid scoreless innings striking out 2, and Brad Fitzsimmons pitched a perfect 9th inning.
A number of program milestones were also achieved on Sunday on top of the three wins, Head Coach Cavanagh Whitely surpassed former coach Josh Ridgeway to become the all-time baseball wins leader at Douglas College in game one (48) and also achieved his 50th win as head coach in game three. The Royals are also only two wins away from breaking the all-time conference win record of 11. Congrats to Coach Whitely for all his hard work and dedication over the past four years and best of luck these next two weekends.
The Royals now sit in 3rd place of the NWAACC North Division with a record of 10-6 just behind Edmonds (14-2) and Bellevue (11-1). Next up for the Royals Baseball team is Olympic College with a double header slated for Saturday at Whalley with the first game starting at 1 pm. Then a long bus trip to Bremmerton, WA for another double header against the Olympic College Rangers on Sunday.
