The 2011 DC Men's Baseball team completed their first four game series sweep yesterday at Shoreline College in Washington, (5-3 and 11-5) to move into 3rd place in the competitive NWAACC North Division standings.
After splitting a mid-week double header with Olympic College, Douglas was forced to reverse their pitching rotation for the four game series against the Shoreline Dolphins. On Sunday in game three, Sean Callegari picked up his team leading 5th victory in a back and forth affair with an aggressive Shoreline lineup. After giving up 3 runs in the 1st inning, Sean and the defense settled down and he struck out 5 hitters on his way to a complete game victory. The Royals scored 4 of their 5 runs in the last three innings on some timely hitting from Sheldon Sinnott and Jeremy Kral who had 2 hits and 2 RBI's each.
The last game of the series, Freshman RHP Clayton Franco settled in after giving up a run in his first three innings of work. The Royals took control on the base paths stealing 7 bases and scoring runs in 6 of the 9 innings. Chandler McLaren, Shayne Kelly and Brad Clarke did most of the damage in the middle of the order with two hits each and 8 RBI's between them. The 11-5 victory sealed the sweep for the Royals in a very crucial weekend toward their goal of making the NWAACC Regional tournament for the 1st time in the program's history.
. DC now sits alone in 3rd place with 9 games to go in the regular season at 8-7. We must continue to play well against both Edmonds and Skagit Valley (the 2 teams chasing us) in order to get into the post season.
In recruiting news, Douglas is proud to announce the commitment of two top RHP pitchers from Ontario for the upcoming season. Hard throwing draft prospect Kyle Beenen and staff ace Alex Johnson from the Etobicoke Rangers will attend Douglas College this Fall and help solidify our depth on the mound. We are excited to have both of the these players come out to BC and hope that this is the start of a trend to get some of the top players across the country to Douglas and play against good US competition.
