Posted May 9/11 - Royals Season Goes Down to Final Game
The 2011 DC Men's Baseball team made a valiant effort on the last day of the regular season on Monday out at Whalley Athletic Park. Having to win both games from Skagit Valley to move onto the playoffs, the team truly left it all out on the field.

Game One was a pitcher's dual through and through with both teams unable to push runs across in the first 7 innings . Douglas sophomore RHP Chris Foreman pitched the game of his career after getting hit by a hard line drive in the 3rd inning. Hardly able to walk directly after, Chris pushed through it and made several game saving defensive plays to keep the score locked at zero. Douglas was finally able to break through in the bottom of the 1st extra frame as Shayne Kelly hit a walk-off double scoring Brad Clarke all the way from 1st base. Foreman went all 8 innings, gave up no runs on just one hit. This was one of the gutsiest performances we've ever seen from a player in a must win game.

With the Royals down to their final game, they turned to RHP Brendan Clark and the offense to win game two. Unfortunately, the Cardinals came out swinging and managed to tack on runs in four of the first five innings. A four run 2nd inning highlighted by a bases loaded double by Jeremy Kral was not enough and Douglas stranded 9 runners over the final four frames for a 9-5 loss. The Cardinals outhit Douglas 14-10 and Kelly, Kral and McLaren led the team offensively.

The series loss to Skagit puts Douglas at 9-15 overall in conference and one game short of making their goal of achieving the first ever playoff birth in the NWAACC North Region. In the end, this is the first time that the program has had a chance play for their lives in the final game of the season. Aside from the disappointing finish, there were a number of bright spots throughout the season and the coaching staff is excited about the 19 returning players and top shelf recruits already signed for next Fall.

The Douglas College Royals Baseball program (and myself personally) would like to thank everyone for their unwavering support all season long. In particular, the Whalley grounds crew (Paul and Gavin) for their hard work in helping us during the wet months of March/April, the DC Athletics department (Maria, Pat, Kyle), and all the Associations and sponsors (Whalley LL, The Dugout Club, Baseball BC, UBC) as well as all the scouts, coaches, parents and spectators that helped and supported during my first year as Head Coach. I truly believe that we are building something great here and look forward to what the future holds at Douglas College.
