Posted Sep 28/09 - Jr Chiefs take third place in Yakima
The Jr Chiefs missed the championship final at the Bleacher Bum Classic in Yakima, Washington, this past weekend by a slim three run margin. Going into Sunday's action needing to beat the host Selah team to advance to the final, the Chiefs dropped a close 11-9 decision. It was, however, a successful weekend for the Fraser Valley squad.

On Friday the Jr Chiefs opened with a 5-2 loss against Dow 16. Caleb Lefebvre and Brad Thomson both threw well, but the offense was shut down, despite Brandon Sonnenberg's 2-for-3 effort (including a long first-inning home run).

Saturday saw Fraser Valley bounce back with a pair of impressive victories. Game one featured Alex Dunbar spinning a gem on the hill to lead the Chiefs to a 7-1 win over Dow 15. Dunbar threw a complete game 4-hitter, with 12 strikeouts and only one walk.

The nightcap featured an exciting game against West Valley. With lot's of talk between the benches, the atmosphere was tense from the get go. It was a tight well played game when the Chiefs entered the bottom half of the seventh inning trailing 3-1. Ryan Felder lead off with a base hit, but after two quick outs things were looking bad for the visitors. Cue the comeback. Jordan McComb hit a long fly ball that was dropped, scoring Felder. Dale Mar's ground ball was booted, setting the table for Brandon Sonnenberg. With two strikes Sonnenberg stroked a clean double to the opposite field scoring both Felder and Mar for the dramatic come-from-behind win.

Sunday the Chiefs scored nine runs on 10 hits, but they could not keep the strong hitting Yakima team off the board.

All in all a great weekend full of great weather and great baseball.
