Posted Nov 17/09 - Pflugerville Basketball dominates sports coverage in Austin American-Statesman on Nov. 17

The Nov. 17th Austin-American Statesman newspaper and online editions focus on Pflugerville girls and boys basketball and football in sports coverage today! Both PHS hoops teams are ranked No. 1 in Central Texas, with junior Nneka Enemkpali (pictured) singled out as a top 10 player to watch and the paper's main feature story on senior boys standout Demetris Smith. Click on "READ MORE" below and check out the stories on statesman.com (go to Preps section on left)!

The Statesman sports main feature is on PHS senior Demetris Smith and his past family tragedies and current successes. That story leads off the girls and boys basketball previews.

Then, PHS football was named Class 5A Army Strong Team of the Week after a bi-district playoff upset win (10-7) over San Antonio Regan.

1. PFLUGERVILLE - A Class 5A state semifinalist last season, Pflugerville will count on inside players Christie Mooney, Adesuwa Ebomwonyi and DyMesheon Hyder until All-State and All-Centex first-teamer Nneka Enemkpali recovers from a knee injury.

Top 10 Central Texas players to watch:

-Lindsey Ansley, senior, Marble Falls. Sharpshooting post player averaged nearly 16 points a game last season.
-Crystal Atwood, senior, Georgetown. A second-team All-Centex pick last season, when she recorded double-doubles in 12 games.
-Courtney Duever, senior, Westlake. A 6-foot-1-inch forward who has signed with Central Arkansas, she helped the Chaps to a 29-5 mark in 2008-09.

-Nneka Enemkpali, junior, Pflugerville. Gifted forward averaged 13.1 points and 11.1 rebounds last season before injuring her knee in a state semifinal.

-Jisele Green, senior, Dripping Springs. Tigers' shooting guard helped her team reach the playoffs last season.
-Jordan Hemker, senior, Hutto. A 5-8 guard, she averaged nearly 14 points per game last season.
-Alexis Hyder, sophomore, LBJ. Powerful inside scorer was one of the leading freshmen in Central Texas last season.
-Ashley James, senior, Stony Point. A reliable scorer who averaged nearly 12 points a game for the Tigers in 2008-09.
-Kali Jerrell, junior, Connally.A third-team All-Centex pick as a sophomore after averaging 16 points per game.
-Maddie Wheeler, senior, Cedar Park. St. Edward's signee and a first-team All-Centex choice last season, when she averaged better than 12 points a game.
