PFLUGERVILLE, Texas -- Stymied by a
39 percent shooting effort and 14 first-half turnovers, the state-ranked
Pflugerville Panthers saw their seven-game win streak end Tuesday with a 59-53
loss to Waco Midway. The Panthers, ranked atop the state 5A standings this week
in the Texas Association of Basketball Coaches/Texas Preps Basketball Magazine
poll, are now 7-1. Junior forward Adesuwa Ebomwonyi (pictured) who collected a double-double with 13 points and
a game-high 10 rebounds to go with three assists and three steals, led the
Pflugerville effort.
Two other P'ville players were in double-figure
scoring. Junior post DyMesheon Hyder added 11 points and sophomore forward Itiana Taylor finished with 10 points. Taylor also had eight rebounds.
Midway,
the defending State 4A champion, is now 5-4, with all four losses coming at the
hands of top-ranked state 5A opponents. Midway was led by a game-high 19 points
from 5-9 senior guard and leading scorer Mackenzie Robertson, daughter of
Baylor women's basketball head coach Kim Mulkey, and 5-10 junior guard Toi
Gober (18 points).
Pflugerville
found itself behind after the first quarter, 18-7, as Midway used fast break
opportunities and two 3-pointers from Robertsonto jump out to the lead. The
Panthers cut Midway's lead to three (26-23) at intermission by out-scoring the
visiting Panthers 16-8 in the second period behind Hyder (eight first half
points) and Ebomwonyi (five points, three steals). P'ville was hurt by 14 first
half turnovers - the most in a half this season.
In the
second half, Pflugerville never gained the lead, but came to within two points
early in the final quarter, 40-38, on an Ebomwonyi putback. Midway countered
with a 3-pointer on its next possession to push the lead to 43-38, and P'ville
would get no closer than three points the rest of the way.
Pflugerville
went eight-for-14 in free throws and held a 35-30 edge in rebounding. The
Panthers turned the ball over just five times in the second half and ended with
19 turnovers, the same number as Midway. The Midway Panthers finished the game
shooting 45.5 percent from the field, hitting 20 of 44 shots, including five
3-pointers. Midway was 13-for-18 from the foul line.
Pflugerville
now breaks for the Thanksgiving holiday and will return to action on Tuesday,
Dec. 1 when it faces its second consecutive state-ranked opponent when Bryan
comes to Pflugerville for a 7 p.m. contest. Bryan (5-1) is ranked 20th in the
5A poll.
