On the evening of September 3 at Whittier Park, the team came away with a 5 - 3 win and the 2012 WSBL Championship.
The Mudcats backed by strong pitching and timely hitting continued their unbeaten streak in the 2012 playoffs. They swept their St. Boniface Legionnaires opponents 3 games to none in the series.
Game 3 started out much like game 2. The Legionaires jumped out to an early lead with doubles by Kellen Burman and Evan Hardman. St.Boniface pitcher Mac Batchelor seemed to have control of the game until the Mudcat bats came alive in the 4th.
After giving a free pass to the first two batters of the inning (Aaron Hildebrandt and Brett Schreyer), the Mudcats then strung together three RBI singles by Ryan Ozunko, Roger Turenne and Chris Leclerc. The fourth run scored as Leclerc stole second base and the throw to second jumped passed the middle infielders into center field. The fifth run came off the bat of Jeremy Voth.
Kildonan starter Angus Klassen was solid again. He scattered 9 hits over seven complete innings of work. He struck out two batters and was supported by a solid defense. The game ended with St.Boniface loading the bases with only one out in the 7th. Klassen then produced a ground ball off the bat of Hardman. The ground ball was fielded cleanly by second baseman Marc De Siegelaere who flipped it to Wes Pomarensky for the out at second. He then made a strong 90 foot throw to first for the final out that clinched the championship for the Mudcats.
Special thanks from the team go out to Ken St. Germain, Paul Lagimodiere and Al Kinley for all their support and generosity over the years.
The Club congratulates the team on their second League Championship. We look forward to seeing them continue to make progress next season in their pursuit of excellence!
