Posted Dec 4/09 - Pflugerville tops Leander, 56-33, behind three in double-figure scoring; Panther JV, Freshmen squads in action Dec. 5 in PHS Tournament championship bracket
LEANDER, Texas -- Led by junior forward Adesuwa Obomwonyi's (pictured) 12 points and seven rebounds and a 21-6 run in the second quarter, the state-ranked Pflugerville Panthers stopped Leander, 56-33, Friday night on the Lions' homecourt. The win lifts the Panthers to 8-2, while Leander is now 8-5. Joining Obomwonyi in double-figure scoring were sophomore forward Itiana Taylor and senior forward Christie Mooney, each with 10 points. Taylor registered a double-double by pulling down a game-high 12 rebounds and also added four steals.

Pflugerville's quickness was a factor in the game, as the Panthers had 20 steals to Leander's two and also forced 25 Leander turnovers. Up 16-10 after the first quarter, the Panthers blazed to a 21-6 run in the second period to push their lead to 18 (47-29) at intermission. That second-quarter run was triggered by Obomwonyi who had six points and four rebounds in that eight-minute period. At the break, P'ville lead Leander in rebounding (26 boards to 15) and had 10 steals to Leander's one.

The balanced Panther attack saw junior post DyMesheon Hyder add eight points and seven rebounds to the winning effort, while sophomore point guard Jasmyn Booker came off the bench to collect seven points and a career-high and game-high six steals.

Both teams shot 37 percent from the floor, with PHS connecting on 22 of 60 field goal attempts and the Lions' shooting 14 for 39 in field goals. Junior guard Sherryah Wallace (12 points) led the Lions.

Pflugerville was strong from the foul line, making 10 of 13 free throws. Leander was a perfect five-for-five in free throws.

The Panthers open District 25-5A play and defense of their 2008-09 championship on Tuesday, Dec. 8 when they travel to Bastrop for a 7 p.m. game.

Pflugerville JV will play for championship of Pflugerville Tournament; may meet fellow PHS team Freshmen "A" (Gold team) which faces Bowie in semifinal play Saturday morning

Please note: weather concerns and team forfeits resulted in the bracket for the JV and Freshmen Tournaments being adjusted for Saturday.

Friday, victories over Vista Ridge (62-16) and Hays (53-25) advanced the Pflugerville JV into Saturday's (Dec. 5) championship game of its own tournament. With the win over Hays in the tourney's championship semifinal bracket, Coach April Ellickson's Panthers will now await an opponent in the 6:30 p.m. title game.

The other semifinal game takes place Saturday morning between Bowie JV and the Pflugerville Freshman "A" (gold) team. The possibility of an all-Pflugerville final will be determined at 11 am Saturday when Bowie and coach Patrick Hinson's Panthers square off.

The Pflugerville Freshmen "B" squad were eliminated from the Freshman Tournament Friday with a loss to Westwood.

For the Pflugerville JV, freshman guard Tayliah Brooks and sophomore guard Taylor Cobbs each scored 10 points in the win over Vista Ridge Friday. With the score tied 6-6 early in the first quarter, the P'ville defense clamped down and allowed just 10 points the rest of the way.

In the Hays game, junior forward Kaela Thompson led the way for the Panthers with 15 points and eight rebounds, while Brooks added 14 points and junior guard Stacy Ogunirinade had a game-high eight steals.
