BUDA, Texas -- Led by dominant post play from sophomore forward Itiana Taylor (14 points, team-high 16 rebounds), junior forward Adesuwa Ebomwonyi (14 points, 14 rebounds) and senior forward Christie Mooney (13 points, 13 rebounds), Pflugerville posted a 65-61 overtime win against Flower Mound Marcus Friday in the Hays Rebel Classic semfinals. The win advances the No. 9 state-ranked Panthers, now 12-2, into Saturday's championship game (noon) where PHS will go up against local opponent Hendrickson HS, also from the PISD school district. Pflugerville is the two-time defending Rebel Classic champion.
Up 45-34 entering the fourth quarter, Pflugerville saw Marcus make a 25-14 run in the final period to send the game into overtime tied 59-59. In the overtime, however, the Pflugerville defense clamped down and allowed just two points as the Panthers earned the four-point victory.
For the first time in recent memory, the Panthers had three players reach the double-double (double figure scoring and rebounding) in the same game.
Ebomwonyi collected a double-double for the third time in the last five games.
Rounding out the double-figure scorers for the Panthers was junior guard Curtiesha Woods who added 12 points. Mooney and Taylor also had four assists each.
