The BOLD Mudhens already knew that a state tournament berth was theirs when they began their play off run at home against Hector On July 18th in Bird Island. Capping off a busy week with eight play off games in ten days by defeating Morris 3-1 in the District title game on Saturday, the Mudhens put another notch in their collective belts with the three game run through the district Final Four Tournament. BOLD began the tournament with an 8-2 victory over Osakis and then advanced to the championship game with a come from behind 6-5 win over Morris. Morris won their way into the final game, and a berth in the state tournament, with a 3-2 win over Madison on Friday night which earned them a rematch with BOLD.
Morris struck first with an unearned run in the top of the second inning on a play which ended with two outs being recorded. The second out of the inning came on a force out at second base in a bases loaded situation. But when the relay throw to first got away, the third out of the inning came on a perfect throw to the plate gunning down what would have been the second run of the inning. BOLD struck back with three runs in the fourth inning, two of which scored on an errant throw to third base after a sacrifice bunt attempt by Joel Erickson. Logan Sandgren won his second game of the tournament as he went the distance giving up five hits and four walks.
BOLD will next play at 7:00 pm in the state tournament on their home field Friday night. They will take on the winner of District 6 in the last of four first round games that day.
