Posted Oct 10/13 - Giants Update - October, 2013

We are reporting on the loss of a legend, the (lack of) progress on the field upgrade, some MB Baseball Hall of Fame inductions and Cash Calendar collections for 2013.

We have some good and some bad news to pass on to all of the supporters of Elmwood Baseball.

Sadly, we recently lost one of our Elmwood Giants. Reg Chopp passed away September 30, 2013. Reg was one of the best ball players to wear a Giants uniform. He was inducted into the Manitoba Baseball Hall of Fame as a member of the Fort White team and later, in 2001, as an individual. He was also a supporter of the current Giants, every year selling up to 100 Cash Calendars, in support of our organization. I had to opportunity to get to know him over the past few years. He always had great stories from his playing days and was proud of his association with the Elmwood Giants. He will be missed, but always fondly remembered.

The current Giants project (new grandstand w/press box & washrooms, storage facilities, …) has been delayed due to “red tape” in getting building permits. Bev Fisher is working hard to try to get things started as soon as possible.

The Giants Organization has 3 new entries into the Manitoba Baseball Hall of Fame (Chris Holmstrom, Tom Thompson, and the 1989 – 1994 Elmwood Giants Senior Baseball Team). There will be a Press Conference @ the Sports Manitoba Building on Pacific Avenue (11:00 am, November 5). Tickets for the MBH of F Banquet.

Hopefully everyone has been able to sell all of their Cash Calendars (more are available from Al K, if you can sell a few more). You can drop off the tickets/money and any unsold calendars (hopefully none) at the Elmwood Legion on Nairn from Monday thru Thursday (October 28 – 31) between 7:00 pm – 9:00 pm
