The Jr. Chargers 5th
grade Boys White basketball team captures yet another championship at the
‘Cooney Classic” in Oconomowoc on January 26th ,
along with a 2nd place finish at Just a Game Field House in the
Dells on January 19th. The championship run by these young men
was very impressive. The Chargers saw Double digit victories over very
good competition including; Oconomowoc, Whitnall and finally Germantown in the
finals. During the second game, the Chargers were majorly outsized down
low. A superb defensive effort, using their speed, leverage and great
footwork, Josh Meulmans, Justin Stevenson, and Adam Fantl shut down the very
big low post play of Whitnall. Outstanding three point shooting by
Kyle Brinkman, great passing by Elijah Houser and Jacob Fobes, along with
unstoppable dribble penetration by Brenden Ban and Darius Bates proved to be
too much for Whitnall to handle.
During the course of
this Semi-Final game Darius Bates suffered a fractured finger on his shooting
hand. Not wanting to let his team down, he begged his coaches to let him
play in the championship game and also in
our two league games the next day. Darius went on to score forty points
between those three games and at one point broke a full court press using only
his left hand and scoring the layup on the other end!
The team is playing
its best basketball of the year. Team and individual confidence is at an
all-time high for these young men but most of all, they are having fun!
