Posted Aug 17/12 - Miller & Meyer Lead Outlaws to big Win in State Opener
Hard fought one run loss in game two on Saturday.

Outlaws-10 / Le Center-0

Friday night was game one for the Outlaws in 2012 State Tournament play as they squared off against the Le Center Braves.  The Outlaws were the visiting team due to being the lower seed coming in.

Chris Nelson wasted no time in the lead off spot drawing a walk to open up play in the top of the first.  Sam "Bammy" Baumgartner then laid down a sacrifice bunt moving Nellie into scoring position.  One batter later Mike Roth laced a single into left field.  Mike hit the ball a bit too hard and Nellie was forced to hold up on third base.  No harm no foul however as Ryan Meyer stepped to the plate a drove Nelson in with a single of his own.

Jeff "Spanky" Miller took the mound for the Outlaws and made quick work of the Le Center squad in the bottom of one tallying two strikeouts along the way.

Jeff Drent opened the top of 2 by reaching on a fielding error.  One pitch later Jeffrey was standing at second base with a steal under his belt.  Two fly outs later Chris Nelson drove Drent in with a single and extended the Outlaws lead to 2-0.

Miller set down the Braves hitters in order in the home half and added two more strikeouts.

More of the same for the Outlaws in the top of the third.  The lead off hitter Ryan Meyer reached on a fielding error.  Troy Fritz followed up with a single and Jeff Drent stepped to the plate.  The book is hard to decipher at this point.  I am pretty sure Meyer and Fritz advanced to second and third at some point during Jeff Drent's at bat.  Jeff then singled to left driving in Meyer.  Troy Fritz was waved around third on the play and was gunned down at the plate in a very close play.  One run would be the extent of the scoring and the Outlaws led 3-0.

Le Center attempted to rally back in the bottom of 3 by using a single and two walks to load the bases.  Miller was able to end the rally with yet another strikeout with the bases loaded.  The K was his third of the inning and 7th in 3 innings of work.

After scoring in each of the first 3 innings it looked as if the Outlaws would go quietly in the 4th.  The first two hitters were retired and Sam Baumgartner came to the plate.  Sammy began what would be a nice two out rally with a walk.  Josh Noble followed with a single and Mike Roth reached on a fielding error.  Sammy scored on one of the two plays although I can't remember how and the book doesn't tell me.  With two runners on Ryan Meyer drilled a two RBI triple scoring Noble and Roth.  When the inning was over the Outlaws had jumped to a 6-0 lead.

More of the same for Miller as he faced only 4 batters in the 4th inning and adding two more strikeouts.

Outlaws hitters kept scoring in the top of the 5th with Jeff Drent leading things off with a walk.  Drent was off and running on the first pitch and Appel pushed a single through the hole on the right side of the infield with Drent reaching third on the play.  Appel then stole second on the following pitch to Robb Larson.  With two runners in scoring position Robb Larson added two more to the scoreboard with a 2 RBI single to left center.  Chris Nelson and Sam Baumgartner then both reached on a walk to load the bases.  Josh Noble then drove in Larson with a sacrifice fly to center.  An appeal on the play secured an out for Le Center as Nellie was caught leaving early when he also attempted to tag from second base.  Mike Roth and Ryan Meyer then both walked and the bases were loaded once again.  Pat Nelson then entered the game for Troy Fritz.  Pat was plunked and picked up an RBI by forcing Sammy in to score.  The next Outlaws hitter grounded out and the rally was finished with another 4 runs crossing the plate and pushing the lead to 10-0.

Le Center again threatened to battle back in the home half of the 5th by loading the bases with only one out.  Miller quickly snuffed the rally by recording back to back strikeouts and once again securing all three of the innings out's by whiffs.  This ended the game due to 10 run rule and the Outlaws were victorious in their first game of tournament action.

Jeff Miller finished the day throwing a 5 inning complete game shutout and striking out 12 Braves hitters.  Ryan Meyer led all Outlaws hitters finishing 2 for 3 with 3 RBI.  Chris Nelson was 1 for 2 with two walks and a run scored.  Sam Baumgartner tallied 2 walks and a sacrifice while scoring twice.  Josh Noble was 1 for 3 with an RBI and a run scored. Mike Roth was 1 for 3 with a walk and a run scored.  Troy Fritz, Jeff Drent, Jeff Appel and Robb Larson were also 1 for 3 on the day.  Drent finished with an RBI and two runs scored while Appel and Larson each scored once with Larson also driving in two runs.

Outlaws-4 / Bloomington-5

A tough one in State Tournament game two on Saturday.  It seemed the Outlaws were in control early and then Bloomington fought back and held the Outlaws at bay to secure the victory.  Sam Baumgartner single handedly attempted to put the Outlaws on his back and win this one.  Sammy was close, but just short in carrying the team to victory.

Once again the Outlaws were the visiting squad as the Bloomington Eagles came into Saturday's action as the number one overall seed in the B-C tournament.

It appeared the Outlaws where in business in the top of the first as Chris "Nellie" Nelson opened play with a base on balls.  Sam Baumgartner laid down a near perfect sacrifice bunt that the pitcher couldn't muster a good throw to first.  With Sammy reaching on the throwing error, one batter later Mike Roth singled and the Outlaws had the bases loaded with one out.  McNally, who was the pitcher of choice for the Eagles, did a great job of working out of trouble and setting down the next two Outlaw hitters in order and chewing up and spitting out the rally that looked to be.

Sammy faced the minimum in the home half of the first using a nifty double play by Ryan Meyer to set down Bloomington in the first.

With one out in the top of the second Jeff Appel slapped a single through the right side of the infield.  One batter later Appel was erased on a fielders choice of the bat of Jeffrey Miller.  Robb Larson maintained his hot stick and followed Miller with a single.  Chris Nelson then joined in with a single and the bases were loaded.  Sam Baumgartner then lined a ball to the outfield that found it's way past the Eagle outfielder and rolled, and rolled, and rolled!  When it was all said and done Bammers was standing on second base and the Outlaws were leading 3-0.  Josh Noble followed Sammy with a walk but McNally ended the damage by securing the third out by strikeout.

Bloomington was able to answer back with one run on their own in the 2nd using a lead off double from Stevens.  Two batters and two outs later, Hamilton picked up the RBI with a single and made the score 3-1 heading into the third.

McNally appeared to find his groove for Bloominton in the third.  He worked around a single by Troy Fritz but mowed down three other Outlaws by strikeout to work a quick inning.

The Eagles continued to chip away in the 3rd.  A lead off walk to Peer, followed by a sacrifice bunt had another Bloominton run in scoring position.  Once again with two outs, Bobbit drove in Peer and Boomington crept to within one run at 3-2.

With one out in the top of the 4th, Robb Larson reached for the second straight time with a walk.  Chris Nelson then reached on a fielding error at second base and Robb Larson moved over the third base.  With runners on first and third Nellie attempted to swipe second and was tossed out on the play.  Larson was unable to score on the throw.  With two outs Sam Baumgartner once again came through.  Sammy slammed an RBI single to left field to score Larson and move the Outlaw's lead back to two runs at 4-2.

In the bottom of 4, Bloomington immediately answered back with a lead off double off the bat of Stevens.  It was Stevens's second double of the day.  A walk and two singles later the Outlaws were finally able to end the inning on a close play at the plate.  Travis "Shooter" Schuett's sweep tag at home secured the third out, but not before the Eagles had scored 3 runs and jumped out to a 5-4 lead.

Both pitchers settled in at that point.  McKnally set down the Outlaws in order in the 5th and 6th innings.  Sam Baumgartner followed suit by doing the same while securing 5 of the 6 outs by strikeout.

The Outlaws attempted to rally back in the top of the seventh with Josh Noble reaching on a walk with two outs.  It wasn't to be though as McKnally secured the final out by coaxing an infield pop out.

Final score was Bloomington nipping the Outlaws 5-4.  Sam Baumgartner was the story of the day for the Outlaws pitching a complete game striking out 5 Eagle hitters and going 2 for 2 at the plate.  Sammy had a doulbe, a single, a walk and a sacrifice, to go along with all four RBI's the Outlaws were able to muster on the day.  Robb Larson was 1 for 2 with a walk and two runs scored.  Chris Nelson, Mike Roth, Troy Fritz, and Jeff Appel were all 1 for 3.

With the loss the Outlaws are out of the running for a B State Championship.  Play is not over however as they will now square off against the Braemar Bees on Saturday August 25th at 1:00pm in Jordan MN.  Let's hope the Outlaws can finish the season on a good note and find a way to get two victories this coming weekend.

Outlaws wins will have to come without the services of their starting center fielder.  Chris Nelson finished play on Saturday with a shoulder injury.  Nellie dove for a ball during action against the Eagles and was injured on the play.  Nellie coninued and finished the game, but came up gimpy on Sunday morning as he was unable to lift his left arm.  An MRI is scheduled for Tuesday at noon, and all Outlaws are holding their breath and keeping their fingers crossed that Chris gets good news.  An update will be posted when it is available.
