Posted Jun 2/13 - Baumgartner Racks up 11 Strikeouts in Complete Game Shutout
Outlaws Improve to 2-0 with 2-0 win over the Northfield Millers

It was finally a beautiful day in Welcome MN on Sunday as the Southwest Outlaws hosted the Northfield Millers.  The game would prove to be a pitchers dual between Northfield's Jim Meyer and Sam Baumgartner for the Outlaws.

After a scoreless half inning in the first from Baumgartner, the Outlaws were able to put one run on the board.  With two outs Jesse "Muff" Teerink reached on a walk.  Mike Roth then smashed a double off the fence in right center field.  Muffy scored all the way from first and the Outlaws jumped out to the early lead.  Jeff Appel then lined the next pitch for a base hit into center field.  Roth was waved home on the play but was gunned down at the plate for the third out.  (It took Mikey about 3 innings to catch his breath after doubling and then one pitch later trying to score from second! hahahah!)

From that point forward Meyer and Baumgartner would exchange scoreless innings all the way until the 6th inning.  The Outlaws threatened several times including back to back singles from Robb Larson and Jason Beckett in the 2nd inning.  The Outlaws also loaded the bases in the 4th inning using errors and walks but couldn't muster enough to score.  Northfield was kept in check with Baumgartner taking a no hitter into the top of 6.  A one out single would find it's way into left field, but Sammy kept the shutout in order.

The Outlaws managed to push one more run across in the bottom of the 6th.  With one out Teerink reached on his second walk of the day.  Muff then stole second as he took off with a Tori Hunter type jump that forced Meyer to balk.  Mike Roth then legged out an infield single that moved Teerink to third.  Roth then stole a base of his own and advanced to second.  Jeff Appel then spun a ground ball to the right side and Muff scored on the play.

The 2-0 lead proved to be enough as Sammy pitched his way out of a jam in the top of 7.  Three singles along with two strikeouts had Northfield with the bases loaded and two outs.  What happened next was pretty odd and I've never seen a game end like this in all my years of baseball.  Chad Henze hit a ball into the hole on the right side and it looked like it would find it's way into right field and tie the game.  The ball ended up hitting the Northfield runner trying to advance to second base.  With that....the game was over and the Outlaws improved to 2-0 on the year.  Phew!!!

Sammy finished the day with 11 punch outs and giving up only 5 hits in his 7 innings of work.  Mike Roth led all Outlaws hitters going 2 for 2 with a double, an RBI and a walk.  Jeff Appel was 1 for 3 with the other RBI.  Robb Larson and Jason Beckett added one hit apiece.  Jesse Teerink scored both of the Outlaws runs after reaching base with walks in the 1st and the 6th.

Next up for the Outlaws is a road game in Edina on Sunday June 9th at 2:00pm.  It's looking like it will be a thin Outlaws crew as everyone and their uncle has decided to get married that weekend or go on family vacation!
