Posted Jul 7/13 - Outlaws Fall to St. Peter but Respond with 10-1 Drubbing of Lorretto

Dennis Larson provided a spark with his line drive single as the Outlaws finish with weekend split.

Outlaws-0 / St. Peter Saints-3

A pitchers dual ended with the St. Peter Saints clipping the Outlaws 3-0.  St. Peter's pitcher Moeller kept Outlaw hitters off balance going the distance and giving up only three hits while striking out 5.

Jeff Miller once again had a solid outing for the Outlaws.  Spanky kept the game tied 0-0 until the fourth when Helling led off with a single and later scored to put the Saints up 1-0.

Helling would later double and score in the 5th and help account for 2 more Saints runs putting them up 3-0.  Helling finished the game 3 for 3 with two doubles and two runs scored.  Jeff Miller gave up the 3 runs in a complete game effort striking out 6 Saints batters while taking the loss.  It is Miller's first loss of the 2013 season but an overall strong outing against one of the best teams in the league.

Moeller spread three Outlaws hits over 7 innings including a Jeff Appel single in the 2nd inning, a Robb Larson single in the 3rd and a Chad Weirtzema single in the 7th. The Outlaws never got a runner past 1st base in the contest.  Tip of the hat to Moeller as he pitched a heck of a game.

Outlaws-10 / Lorretto-1

The loss lit a fire under the Outlaws as they came back with a vengeance against the 7-1 Loretto Sox.  Sam Baumgartner got the nod for the Outlaws.  A loss of a coin toss had the Outlaws once again playing the visiting team.  Sam attempted to help his pitching cause by leading of the game with a sharp single to left.  Ryan Meyer followed with a bunt single while attempting to very successfully move Sammy into scoring position. The next three Outlaws hitters were retired in order however and the threat was snuffed.  Sammy pitched around a two out double in the home half of the inning to keep the score locked at 0.

Grant Carson started the Outlaw second inning with a single and Jesse Teerink followed suit.  Robb Larson then reached on a fielders choice as Carlson was retired at third base.  A Ryan Carlson walk set the bases loaded table for Wertz who drove in the first run of the game on a fielders choice.  Travis Schuett then put the Outlaws up 2-0 with an RBI single.  Two runs would be the extent of the damage.

Loretto battled back by tallying an unearned run of their own to bring the score to 2-1.  That's where the score would stay until the top of the 6th inning.  The third inning saw Baumgartner and Oelrich each single but they couldn't be pushed across the plate.  Sammy jumped into cruise control facing one hitter over the minimum the next 3 innings and striking out 5 more Sox batters.  Sammy had 8 k's through 5 innings of work.

The Outlaws broke things open in the top of the 6th inning with Sammy reaching on an error followed by yet another Meyer bunt single.  Oelrich would also reach on an error.  That brought Magic Mike Roth to the plate and he quickly rapped a single driving in both Bammy and Meyer.  Cheeks (Oelrich) would later score on another fielding error on a Jeff Appel grounder.  When the inning was over the Outlaws had a 5-1 lead.

Sammy once again pitched a one-two-three 6th inning and opened the door for more Outlaw offense.  Robb Larson led of the inning with a single and one batter later his dad Dennis Larson pasted a line drive to center field.  Lars hit this ball so hard the ball wouldn't roll right due to the dent.  A Jeff Miller RBI single, a Baumgartner RBI single, a Meyer walk, an Oelrich 2 RBI single, and Mike Roth's second hit of the game pushed across 5 more Outlaw runs and put the game out of reach at 10-1.  Paul Oelrich came on for an inning of relief and secured the win for Baumgartner by tossing a scoreless 7th inning.

Sammy finished the day pitching 6 innings of earned run free ball while striking out 8 Sox hitters and giving up only two hits.  Sammy also led all hitters going 3-4 with an RBI and two runs scored.  Ryan Meyer had a 2 for 3 day and also scored twice.  Paul Oelrich finished 2 for 4 and added 2 RBI's to his team leading total of 10 for the 2013 campaign.   Mike Roth finished with two consecutive hits to finish his day 2-4 with 2 RBI.  Grant Carlson, Jesse Teerink, Robb Larson, Travis Schuett and Jeff Miller all finished the day going 1 for 3.  Muff, Robb, Shooter and Miller each scored once and Spanky had the other RBI.  Dennis Larson finished the day with a perfect 1 for 1 and scored.  He leads all Outlaw hitters with a 1.000 average on the year.

An explosive game 2 for the Outlaws bats as they rebound nicely from a tough loss.  Sam Baumgartner looked dominant on the mound and breezed through the game for the win.  Dennis Larson was a bright spot for the offense driving a ball to center for a single in his first career River Valley League at bat.
