Posted Jul 20/13 - Jeff Miller Pitches Outlaws Past Bloomington
Spanky struck out 9 Bloomington hitters on his way to his 4th win of the season.

Bloomington-2 / Outlaws-3

A highly anticipated match-up between the 5-3 Bloomington Eagles and the 5-3(7-3 with two forfeits including Seafoam on this date.) Southwest Outlaws.  The game was important for both teams as they are neck and neck in the Rawlings division standings.

Jeff Miller took the mound for the home Outlaws.  Spanky quickly found his groove tossing a scoreless first.  The Outlaws attempted to jump on the Eagles early by loading the bases in the home half.  Robb Larson reached on an error and one batter later Josh Noble blooped a single into left field. Mike Roth drew a walk and the bases were juiced.  Bloomington's pitcher Frey showed savoy by pitching out of trouble and retiring the next two Outlaw hitters to escape.

Spanky pitched out of a bases loaded jam himself in the top of the 2nd and ended the rally by finishing a mow em down inning with a strikeout for out number 3.  The Outlaws also went in order in the 2nd.

Miller settled in and once again struck out the side in the third setting up and mowing down three Eagle hitters in order.  The Outlaws broke through in the 3rd with Travis Schuett leading of the inning reaching on an error.  One batter later Robb Larson lined a single to left and joined him on the base paths.  Ryan Meyer joined in with a single that was misplayed by the Eagle left fielder allowing Schuett and Larson to score on the play.  Larson slid under a sweep tag on a close relay at home plate.  The ball bounced free however and Larson put the Outlaws up 2-0.

The Outlaws were held in check in the 4th inning scrounging only a Jeff Appel one out line drive single to left field.  They were also retired in order in the 5th inning.  Miller kept the score 2-0 until the Eagles battled back in the 6th.  A one out Frey single followed by a Bobbitt RBI double put the Eagles within one run of the lead.  One batter later Giesen tied the game with an RBI single.  Miller ended the rally there and it was all tied up after 5 and 1/2 innings of play.

It's a bit hard to remember how this next half inning all went down, but I'll do my best. Robb Larson led off the inning with a walk but was erased on a fielders choice one batter later.  Ryan Meyer took his place and was himself erased on a fielders choice off the bat of Josh Noble.  With Noble at first base it was flat out hustle that put the Outlaws in a position to win.  Mike Roth hit a ball that was misplayed by the Bloomington third baseman and Noble reached third on the play.  (He can still run folks.)  Grant Carslon then entered a lengthy battle at the plate fouling off several pitches before drawing a walk.  Ball four got past the Eagle catcher and Noble scampered across the plate giving the Outlaws a 3-2 lead heading into the 7th.

The one run was all Miller needed as he pitched a 1-2-3 7th inning ending the game in Spanky fashion with a strike out.  It was Miller's 9th K on the day to go with yet another complete game win.  Miller surrendered only 3 hits over his 7 innings of work and improved his record to 4-1 on the year.

Robb Larson was 1 for 2 with a run scored.  Jeff Appel finished the day 1 for 2.  Josh Noble was 1 for 3 scoring the big go ahead run in the 6th.  Ryan Meyer was also 1 for 3 on the day.

Not a huge day offensively for either club as both pitchers dominated the day.  With the win the Outlaws improve to 8-3 on the year just one back from the division leader in the River Valley Rawlings division.
