Posted Aug 24/13 - Miller Spanks St. Louis Park and Extends State Scoreless Streak to 16 innings
Where there's a will there's a way as Outlaws scratch 1-0 victory in the bottom of the 9th...

Outlaws- 1 / St. Louis Park - 0 (9 Innings)

Jeff Miller continued to make a name for himself in the River Valley league, and continued to dominate in 2013 State Tournament play.

On a beautiful Saturday afternoon on the second weekend of state play, the Outlaws squared off against the St. Louis Park Cardinals in Prior Lake.  If you are a fan of offense you hated this game, if you are a fan of great pitching you loved it.  The two squads locked horns in a classic pitchers dual.

With the Outlaws as the home team Jeff "Spanky" Miller got things started on the mound.  He made quick work of the Cardinals in the top of the first setting them down in order.  The Outlaws didn't make much noise in the home half other than a two out double off the bat of Paul Oelrich.  Oelrich was left stranded however as would become the norm on this Saturday afternoon.

The Cardinals threatened in the top of the second loading the bases with nobody out.  With the bases juiced Mann laced a Miller pitch down the first baseline to gold glover Ryan Meyer.  Meyer snatched the liner and quickly stepped on 1st base for a double play.  Miller coaxed a fly ball out from the next batter and the threat was erased.  The Outlaws went down in order in the home half.

Miller and the Cardinals pitcher exchanged blank frames all the way to the 9th inning.  Along the way Miller tallied 8 strikeouts and kept St. Louis Park off the board.  The only real threat for the Outlaws came in the bottom half of the 6th.  With one out Ryan Meyer singled.  One batter later Mike Roth was hit by a pitch followed by a Jeff Appel walk.  The bases were juiced, but a pop fly to short ended the rally.

In dramatic fashion the Outlaws headed into the bottom of the 9th with the score remaining 0-0.  League executives were scrambling to dig up the rules on a playoff game going past 9 innings.  A little known rule has teams each starting with a runner on 2nd base and the top of the line up hitting if games go past a 9 frame limit.

Chad Wiertzema wanted to prevent the buried rule from happening.  With one out Wertz started an Outlaw rally by battling and working a base on balls.  Justin Williamson then entered the game as a pinch runner for Wertz.  A pitch later, on a close play, Willy displayed his speed by sliding in safely at second base with a stolen base.  Baumgartner then attempted to end the game with a line drive single to left center, but Willy was unable to score on the play.  Ryan Meyer then stepped to plate.  Having been an offensive power house all season Meyer didn't disappoint.  He lined a single past the fist baseman and Willy trotted across the plate with the winning run.

The celebration started as the Outlaws stole the game late.  Probably the most exciting game in the young history of Outlaws Baseball.  On top of his clutch game winning RBI, Meyer led Outlaw hitters finishing 2 for 4 on the day.  Paul Oelrich was one for three with a double and a base on balls.  Sammy and Grant Carlson had the only other hits for the Outlaws with Bammers finishing 1 for 5 and Carlson going 1 for 3 with a single and a walk.  Jeff Appel reached base twice with two base on balls, Roth and Teerink both reached once with both being plunked.  Chad Wiertzema started the big rally with his base on balls in the 9th.

The hero of the day was Jeff Miller pitching the complete game 9 inning shut out to earn the victory.  Spanky finished with 8 strikeouts and extended his scoreless innings pitched streak to 16 for the state tournament.
