Posted Jul 6/14 - Miller and Outlaws Tame the Tigers to Secure Weekend Split

Belle Plaine-1 / Outlaws-10

It was a twin bill Sunday in Welcome as the Outlaws opened up their home 2014 schedule by hosting the Belle Plaine Gray Tigers and the St. Peter Saints.

Jeff Miller took the hill for the Outlaws in game 1 vs Belle Plaine and pitched a scoreless first frame.

In the home half Sam Baumgartner got things going by doing the lead-off hitters job, seeing many pitches and drawing a walk.  Robb Larson then did his job and moved Sammy into scoring position with a bunt.  Ryan Meyer reached on an error and Mike Roth strolled to the plate with the bases loaded.  Big Mike smashed  a double and drove in Sammy and Meyer to give the Outlaws a 2-0 lead.  Grant Carlson followed Roth with a single, but the remaining Outlaws on the base-paths would be left stranded.

Miller was back to work in the 2nd, putting the Tigers down in order and securing two of the outs by strikeout.

With one out in the bottom of the second, Justin Williamson and Mike Ringnell worked back to back walks.  With Sammy at the plate Willy stole third and the catchers throw found its way into the outfield.  Willy scored on the play extending the Outlaw's lead to 3-0.  Baumgartner would eventually work his second walk of the day, but him and Ringo would be left on the bases.

The Tigers began chipping away at the Outlaws lead in the top of the third by using two hits and two walks to score a run.  Miller did work out of trouble in the inning by pitching a grounder to short with two outs and the bases loaded.  Spanky added two more strikeouts in the third.

The Outlaws only had two base runners in the home half as both Carlson brothers were plunked.  I'm not sure if Belle Plaine has something against Ryan and Grant.  (Just kidding)  Neither would score however and the score remained 3-1 heading into the 4th.

Miller once again pitched a scoreless inning in the 4th as the Tigers stranded two runners.

Justin Williamson started a big 4th inning for the Outlaws by leading off with a single.  Mike Ringnell once again played copy cat and added a single of his own.  Baumgartner moved both runners up one base with a sacrifice bunt.  As if drawn up in a baseball how to book, Robb Larson singled and drove in Willy and Ringo.  One out later Mike Roth added his second hit of the day with a pop up that ended up falling in the infield allowing Larson to score on the play as he was wheeling from second base on contact with 2 outs.  Grant Carlson reached after Roth on an error.  Ryan Carson was then hit by a pitch for the 2nd plate appearance in a row, loading the bases.  Jesse "Muff" Teerink extended the Outlaws lead to 7-1 with an RBI single.  (The book is murky so I'm not sure how this all went down, but I hope you enjoy what I'm piecing together...errr...making up.)  Travis "Shooter" Schuett followed Teerink with a base hit before the inning was finally ended.  When the dust settled the Outlaws had scored 6 runs and were up 9-1.  Even if that's not how it really happened....it's one nice inning for the home team.  I think some people scored on passed balls or something???

Miller would end up keeping the Tigers off the board for the next three innings and adding 6 more strikeouts.  The Outlaws would score one more run in the bottom of the 6th on a solo home-run off the bat of Ryan Meyer.  Mike Roth secured his third hit of the day, also in the 6th inning but did not score.

When it was all said and done the Outlaws finished the game with a 10-1 victory and improved to 5-0 on the year.  Jeff Miller pitched the complete game giving up only one run on three hits while striking out 11 Tiger hitters.

St. Peter-2 / Outlaws -0

Not much to write about in this one other than Sam Baumgartner for the Outlaws and John Landkamer for the St. Peter Saints.  The two hurlers locked horns in a classic pitchers dual.

As seems to typically be the case, the Outlaws struggled to put runs on the board with Sam Baumgartner on the mound.  St. Peter isn't an easy match up for any team to score many runs against, but Landkamer was superb on this afternoon.

The only scoring on the day came in the top of the 3rd for the Saints as they used 2 hits and 3 walks to score 2 runs.  That would be all that Baumgartner would allow the Saints over 7 innings of work, but it would prove to be enough.  Sammy kept them off the board for the other 6 frames giving up 6 hits over his 7 innings and striking out five.  A very good day on the mound against a very good team for Sammy.

The Outlaw's offense struggled all day to get anything going against Landkamer.  The only time any Outlaw runner reached 2nd base was in the 3rd inning as Jesse Teerink opened the frame with a walk.  Justin Williamson sacrificed Muffy over to 2nd base, but that is where he would be left.  Landerkamer was dominate only allowing a 5th inning single to Mike Roth and a 6th inning single to Ryan Carlson.  Landerkamer pitched the complete game striking out 9 and allowing only the previous three described base runners.

With the loss the Outlaws finished the weekend with a 5-1 2014 season record.  Although they suffered their first defeat of the season the Outlaws did witness a stellar pitching performance from Sam Baumgartner.
