Posted Jul 19/14 - Marathon Battle with Waconia Ends in Outlaw Walk Off Win in the 10th
Jeff Miller pitched a 10 inning complete game striking out 13, and Ryan Meyer ends it in the 10th with a walk off bomb....

First of all, the Outlaws would like to thank the whole Waconia crew that made it down for Welcome days.  They were more than accommodating when the Le Center Braves were forced to postpone the early game.  Thank you!  It was a very fun game!

Jeff Miller was the starting pitcher for the Outlaws squaring off against the former 2013 state tournament rival.  The two teams played a tight ball game in last years tournament and this game would prove to be no different.

Miller ran into a bit of trouble after retiring the lead off hitter in the 1st inning.  Waconia's number two hitter reached on an error and then the Islanders got back to back to back singles from Darrin, Verge and Leroy.  Leroy drove in two with his single to put the Islanders out to an early 2-0 lead.  (I only have nick names in for Waconia due to the fact that's how the line-up card was.)  It looked as if the Outlaws would answer right back as the home half started with Sam Baumgartner and Robb Larson both being hit by a pitch.  Ryan Meyer laid down a bunt and moved both runners into scoring position.  It was all for none though as Mike Roth laced a liner that looked to find the right field grass, only to be snagged by Verge at second base.  Verge then fed Haugland who doubled off Robb Larson at 2nd.

After the first inning kick around by the Outlaws defense, Jeff Miller found his mo-jo.  Spanky set the Islanders down in order in the 2nd inning.  With two outs in the bottom of the second Jeff Appel worked a base on balls.  Jesse Teerink followed Appel with a line drive single down the right field line that allowed Appel to advance to third.  Jason Beckett then hit a roller to short and Teerink was called out on a very close play at second base to end the inning.

Miller was back to work in the third once again setting Waconia down in order and retiring his 8th batter in a row.  With two outs in the bottom of the third the Outlaws offense woke up.  Sean Mangan started the rally with a single and Sam Baumgartner followed with a walk. Robb Larson then shot a hard hit ball to the right side that drew an errant throw that found its way past the 1st baseman and rattled off the fence.  The error allowed both Mangan and Baumgartner to trot across the plate and tie the game.  Larson was able to advance to 2nd base on the play.  Verge and Waconia would work out of trouble limit the damage to the 2 runs and the pitching dual would begin.

Jeff Miller would lock horns with Verge for the Islanders in a true battle of great pitching.  Neither pitcher would give up a run for the next 7 innings.  Over that stretch Miller would add 11 more strikeouts and complete a stretch of 7 fanned batters in a row starting in the 5th and continuing through the end of the 7th.  Verge would also pitch the Outlaws offense into continued frustration by scattering hits and keeping the home team off the board.  Mike Roth would double in the 4th after a Ryan Meyer walk, Jason Beckett would secure the only hit in the 5th with a single, Sammy Baumgartner was the only runner in the 6th with a walk, and Beckett added his 2nd hit of the day representing the Outlaw's only runner in the 8th with a single.  Through all of that...no runs would cross the plate.

Jeff Miller would throw a wet blanket on a Waconia threat in the 8th inning after three runners reached base.  The real break for the Outlaws would come in the top of the 9th however.  A break for the Outlaws was a heart breaker for the Islanders.  With a runner on 1st and two outs an Islander hitter (No name...as our book is messed by unreported substitutions at that point.) laced a ball to the right center and it ran the gap.  Ryan Carlson closed quickly on the ball as it hit the fence, but the Waconia runner from first base was rounding third to put the Islanders up by a run.  Not so fast said the baseball gods...Carlson threw his hands in the air as the ball rolled under the right field fence.  A truly horrible break for Waconia as the scoring runner was returned to third base and the hitter was plopped on second with a ground rule double.  With runners on 2nd and 3rd Miller proceeded to add his 13th strikeout of the day to end the rally.  Yikes!

The Outlaws would have one base runner in the home half of the 9th as Sam Baumgartner reached for the 4th time in as many at-bats with a single.  Sammy would be left stranded however as Verge continued to baffle Outlaw hitters and keep the score at 2-2 heading to the 10th.

Jeff Miller earned his ace work horse title, as he refused to leave the game and headed out for the 10th.  Jeffrey pitched around two walks and kept the score 2-2 heading to the home half.

That's where Ryan Meyer comes in....Ryno began his stroll out to the plate to lead of the 10th for the Outlaws when the on-deck hitter Jeff Appel looked at him and said..."Do something cool."  After working the count in his favor, Meyer did something cool and smashed a line drive to deep right field. The ball cleared the fence and ended the game with an Outlaws 3-2 victory.  With the win the Southwest boys improved to 7-2 on the year.

Jeff Miller was the story of the day pitching all 10 innings giving up the only 2 first inning runs and striking out 13 Islander hitters.  Spanky is a stud....

Sam Baumgartner led all Outlaw hitters reaching base all 4 times at bat going 1 for 1 with 2 walks, a single, a hit by pitch and a run scored.  Now that's a lead off hitter!  Jason Beckett was 2 for 3 with two singles, Ryan Meyer was 1 for 2 with a sacrifice, a walk, and the huge walk off bomb, Mike Roth was 1 for 3 with a double, Jesse Teerink was 1 for 3 with a single, and Sean Mangan was 1 for 3 with a run scored.
