Posted Aug 3/14 - Carlson Brothers Back a Solid Pitching Performance from Oelrich to Carry Outlaws Past Le Center
Grant Carlson had a big 2 RBI single and his brother Ryan earned the victory in relief of Paul Oelrich who pitched 6 solid innings striking out 10.

Le Center-2 / Outlaws -3

A hot one in Welcome MN this past Sunday as the Le Center Braves traveled to the home of the Outlaws.  The match-up was a make up date for a previously postponed game.  Special thanks to the Le Center crew for putting enough guys together to travel down.

Paul Oelrich took the hill for the home team Outlaws in game one.  Chad Blaschko worked a lead off walk to open the game and the inning for the Braves.  Ole struck out the next hitter for the first out of the inning.  Blaschko then was introduced to the arm of Outlaw catcher Grant Carlson as he tried to swipe second base.  Robb Larson caught the throw from Grant and put the tag on Blaschko for the second out.  Paul would pitch a pop up to short to end the 1st with only the one Braves runner.  Rob Bruner was on the mound for the visiting Braves.  With one out in the home half of the first Robb Larson got things started with a base on balls.  One out later, Mike Roth and Ryan Meyer both drew walks to load the bases.  The free passes set the stage for a 2 RBI single off the bat of Grant Carlson that scored both Larson and Roth.  Jesse Teerink would reach on yet another walk, but Bruner would work out of trouble with a strikeout.

Oelrich would allow only one Braves runner in the 2nd on a base on balls.  Paul pitched around the walk however and added his 2nd and 3rd strikeout of the game.  Justin Williamson and Jason Beckett would lead off the bottom of the 2nd with a walk each.  Willy would steal a base somewhere in there but the book doesn't quite tell me which one.  It was all for none though as Bruner settled down and struck out the next two batters and coaxed a grounder to short to end the inning.

Lynn Schwarz led off the third for the Braves with a base hit.  Oelrich would retire the next two hitters by strikeout.  A boot followed by a base hit would push the first Le Center run across the plate and leave the score 2-1 in favor of the Outlaws after 2 and a half innings.  The Outlaws would try and muster a response in the bottom of the third with Oelrich adding a one out single followed by a Mike Roth base on balls.  Bruner would again end the rally by striking out the next two Outlaws and raising his K tally to 5 on the day.

With one out in the 4th Tim Palmquist singled but was quickly erased on a fielders choice.  Lynn Schwarz added his second single of the day to put two runners on.  Oelrich closed the door on the Braves threat with his 6th strikeout of the day ending the inning.  Trying to muster something with one out, Ryan Carlson (he gets hit a lot) was plunked.  By the looks of it (I wasn't at the game so I'm looking at the book.) he was then picked off of first for out number 2.  Justin Williamson tired to revive the scoring chance by reaching on a walk and then stealing himself into scoring position.  The base swipe was Willy's second of the day.  Willy would be left stranded though as Bruner once again forced a pop up to end the inning.

The Braves pesky Chad Blaschko led off the 5th by drawing a walk that was immediately followed by a Mike Blashko single. (Brothers???)  Rob Bruner, in an attempt to help his cause on the mound drew a base on balls to load the bases.  From how this next play is described to me I guess it was a controversial one...  Chad Blaschko took off from third as Oelrich was in the stretch in an attempt to steal home.  Oelrich attempted to step off and threw Blaschko out at the plate.  The umpire called a balk on Oelrich and Blashko tied the ball game up at 2 each.  Blaschko audibly made it clear that he would have been safe either way and it wouldn't have mattered....The play must have angered Oelrich as he proceeded to mow down the next three Braves hitters in order to raise his strikeout total to 9 on the day.  Bruner secured the first two outs of the home half in order for the Braves.  He then plunked both Josh Noble and Robb Larson before a ground ball ended the inning with the score 2-2.

Brent Newman led of the 6th with a single and the Braves had their first hitter on base for the second inning in a row.  Not much support after that though as the next three batters were retired by Oelrich.  More good pitching for the Braves in the bottom of the inning as Bruner also had a 1-2-3 inning.

Ryan Carlson came on in relief of Oelrich in the 7th.  Oelrich finished the day pitching a solid 6 innings giving up one earned run and striking out 10 batters.  Oelrich scattered 6 hits while walking 3.  Carlson kept the game knotted at 2 each, giving up only a one out single before retiring the next two hitters and securing the final out by strikeout.  Jess "Muff" Teerink started the 7th inning rally for the Outlaws by reaching first after a dropped third strike.  Ryan Carlson then attempted to bunt Teerink into scoring position and the Braves fielder overthrew 2nd base allowing Carson to reach safely and Teerink to advance.   Justin Williamson then laid down another bunt and the Brave's pitchers throw was taller than the third basemen finding it's way into left field.  Muffy trotted across the plate on the error to score the winning run and give the Outlaws a 3-2 win.

With the win the Outlaws improved to 8-4 on the season.  Paul Oelrich pitched a great game...I already laid out his pitching line, but what a great outing.  Ryan Carlson was flawless in relief for the 7th inning to steal the win.  Somehow the Outlaws slipped by with only 2 hits on the day.  The big 2 RBI single from Grant Carlson in the 1st inning and Oelrich's third inning single.  Mike Roth did reach base 2 out of his 3 at bats with 2 walks and a run scored, Justin Williamson reached base twice with walks and had the sac bunt that drew the errant throw to win the game.  Robb Larson was hit by a pitch, scored a run and walked, Josh Noble was hit by a pitch, Ryan Meyer walked, Jesse "Muff" Teerink reached base and scored the winning run, Ryan Carlson was hit by a pitch and sacrificed bunted in the 7th, and Jason Beckett reached base with a walk.

Jordan Millers-5 / Outlaws-4

Another weekend...another double header.  The Jordan Millers made the trip down to Welcome to take on the Outlaws in the nightcap of the 85 degree day.  Jeff Miller took the mound for the Outlaws and pitched a scoreless 1st inning.  The Outlaws once again charged out of the gates with Josh Noble leading off the game by being plunked and Robb Larson immediately following with a base on balls.  (I wasn't at the game so I'm not sure how this happened.)  Paul Oelrich then hit into a fielders choice that scored Noble.  Josh and Robb must have advanced somehow...  The Outlaws clean up hitter Mike Roth then stepped to the plate and did more of what he has done all year....driving in Oelrich with an RBI single putting the Outlaws up 2-0 in the first.  The next two Outlaws hitters were retired in order.

The Millers wouldn't waste time in striking back in the top of the 2nd as they scored two runs of their own to tie the game at 2-2.  The Outlaws would load the bases in the home half using a Jason Beckett 2 out single, Justin Williamson reaching on an error and a Chad Wiertzema walk.  The Jordan pitcher would work out of trouble by securing the 3rd out by strikeout.

Jordan jumped out to their first lead of the game adding another 2 runs in the top of the third.  The Outlaws would have only one runner on base over the next three innings as Robb Larson reached on an error in the 5th.

Jeff Miller worked a scoreless 5th inning for the Outlaws but would give up one run in the 6th to put the Millers up 5-4.  Jordan would hold the one run lead into the 7th as the Outlaws attempted to battle back.  Jesse Teerink led off the bottom of the 7th with a walk, but the next two Outlaw hitters were retired.  With two outs Justin Williamson would work out a walk to move the tying run into scoring position.  The Millers slammed the door shut on the home crew as the next Outlaw hitter dribbled a come backer to the pitcher to end the game.

Jeff Miller pitched a complete game in the losing effort striking out 8 Miller hitters.  Josh Noble was 1 for 2 with a walk, a single and two runs scored, Robb Larson was 1 for 2 with a run scored, Paul Oelrich was 1 for 3 with 2 RBI and a run scored, Mike Roth was 1 for 3 with an RBI and Jason Beckett was also 1 for 3.
