Posted Jun 5/16 - A Weekend Split for the Outlaws

Jeff Miller pitches complete game shutout in game 1 and Jesse Teerink goes 3 for 3 with 2 RBI in nightcap loss to St. Peter.

Le Center-0 / Outlaws - 10

It was a blustery hot day in Welcome as the Le Center Braves came to town for a Southwest Division matchup.  The Outlaws finally filled their dugout with many red jerseys which was great relief on a double header Sunday.

Outlaws ace Jeff Miller took the hill for the home team.  Miller would keep the Braves hitters off balance all afternoon.  Miller faced only two over the minimum through the first 4 innings of work.  Spanky hit a batter in the 3rd and a runner reached on an error in the 4th.  Neither would advance farther than first base.  The Braves did muster a threat in the 5th as their lead off hitter provided the first hit of the day with a single.  The Braves added a second single one batter later, but Miller squashed the rally with back to back fly outs.  Two more Braves runners would reach in the 6th but Miller once again pitched around the trouble and kept a zero on the visiting board.  Miller finished the day tossing 6 scoreless innings while striking out 6 and allowing only 3 hits.

Outlaw bats were hungry as Sam Baumgartner opened play with a 1st inning lead off single.  One batter later Paul Oelrich also singled.  Mike Roth sent a shot to the right field gap and doubled home both runners for an early 2-0 home team lead.

More runs in the second inning with Robb Larson leading off with a single.  Troy Appel making his 2016 debut drove a double through the wind into right field.  With the two runners in scoring position Jason Beckett lined a ball off the third baseman's glove that snuck down the left field line.  Larson scored on the play with Appel advancing to third.  The Braves then executed a fine defensive play with a 6-4-3 double play on which Troy crossed the plate with the Outlaws 4th run.

Back at it in the third inning, Sam Baumgartner once again was on the base paths with a lead off walk.  Sammy was quickly erased on a fielders choice off the bat of Jeremiah Fitzgerald.  The trade off in speed paid dividends for the Outlaws as Paul Oelrich doubled and Fitzy motored around the diamond to score from first base.  Mike Roth reached on a throwing error and Grant Carlson followed with an RBI single driving in Oelrich, pushing the Outlaw lead to 6-0 after three innings.

Troy Appel provided the only spark in the 4th and 5th innings with a 1 out 4th inning single.  Braves pitcher Lynn Schwartz would set the other 6 hitters down in order.

Justin Williamson led off the 6th by reaching on an error. One batter later Paul Ebeling doubled Willy in.   Doug Shepard maintained his 1.000 OB% with a base on balls but one batter later was erased on a fielders choice.  With two runners on Robb Larson maintained his blistering start to the 2016 season with a n RBI single.  The bases would then be loaded after Troy Appel was plunked in the ribs.  The 10 run rule would be placed in effect as Jason Beckett ended the game with a 2 RBI single.  With the 10-0 win the Outlaws improved to 3-2 on the year.

Jason Beckett led all hitters going 2 for 3 with 3 RBI.  Paul Oelrich was 2 for 2 with two runs scored, Troy Appel was 2 for 2 with a double and a run scored, Robb Larson was 2 for 3 with two runs scored and an RBI, Mike Roth was 1 for 2 with a 2 RBI double, Paul Ebeling was 1 for 1 with an RBI double and Grant Carlson was 1 for 2.

 St. Peter - 4 / Outlaws - 2

Not much to write about in this game as St. Peter pitcher Bob Elsen kept Outlaws hitters off balance and at bay all day.  With a good mixture of pitches Elsen didn't allow a run in his 6 innings of work.  The Outlaws managed only three hits over Elsen's 6 innings with a Brett Wiltrout infield single in the 2nd and  two Jesse Teerink singles in the 2nd and 5th inning.  Sam Baumgartner reached with two free passes and Justin Williamson with one walk.  Elsen didn't allow any of the base runners to score and was in control the entirety of the game.

The Saints jumped out to an early lead on Outlaws Pitcher Ryan Carlson plating 2 runs in the 1st  and one in the second.  They would extend their lead to 4-0 with another insurance run in the 4th.  Carlson went 4 innings on the bump for the Outlaws striking out one Saints hitter.

Paul Oelrich came on in relief of Carlson in the 5th and threw three shutout innings.  Paul struck out three and gave up only one single in the 5th inning.

The only offense in the nightcap for the Outlaws came after the Saints lifted Elsen in the 7th inning for relief pitcher Steve Winkler.  With one out Paul Oelrich reached on a walk.  (Yes...you read that correctly...Paul walked.)  The next Outlaw batter was retired and it looked like it would be another quick inning for the Outlaws.  Paul Ebeling added a spark to the late rally with a single to left field.  After a long battle that saw the count full, Brett Wiltrout worked a walk to load the bases.  Jesse "Muff" Teerink then made things interesting driving a 2 RBI double to right field making the score 4-2 and representing the tying run at second base.  There was almost magic as the next Outlaw hitter grounded to short.  The ball was bobbled a bit and the throw was in the dirt at first base.  The Saints first basemen was able to pick the ball up out of the dirt a half step in front of the Outlaw runner and the game ended.

Jesse Teerink provided almost all the offense for the Outlaws going 3 for 3 with the late 2 RBI double and two singles.  Paul Ebeling was 1 for 1 with a single and a run scored, Brett Wiltrout was 1 for 2 with a single and a walk, Sam Baumgartner reached twice on free passes, Paul Oelrich walked once and scored and Justin Williamson walked once.

The Outlaws finish the day back at .500 with a 3 and 3 record.  Next up they will travel to Henderson to take on the Legends.  First pitch is next Saturday at 1:00pm.
