Posted Jun 11/16 - 4 Run Legend 1st Proves too Much for Outlaws

Outlaws-5 / Legends-7

It was a HOT one in Henderson MN last Sunday as the Outlaws traveled to face their division rival Legends.  With a forecast in the upper 90's and a heat index predicted at 100 or more, players slammed waters and other beverages in an attempt to stay cool.

The Outlaws bats didn't open the game as hot as the temps...a Paul Oelrich single was the only noise for the Southwest crew in the top of the first.

The Legends pounced on Outlaws starting pitcher Ryan Carlson in the home half of the first plating 4 runs on 3 hits and two walks.

With two outs in the top of the 2nd Jason Beckett started a rally with a single to left field.  One pitch later Beckett advanced into scoring position on a wild pitch.  Jeff Appel then drove a 2-0 fastball to left field plating Beckett.  The Outlaws would settle for one run and shave the lead to 4-1.

The Legends quickly put the lead back to 4 by getting a run back in the bottom of 2.

The Outlaws continued to whittle away at the lead in the third.  With one out Sam Baumgartner worked a base on balls that was followed by a line drive single off the bat of Gabe Kerkaert.  Paul Oelrich worked the second free pass of the inning to load the bases.  As he almost always does...Mike Roth singled and drove in Sammy and Gabe to tighten the score to 5-3 in favor of the Legends.

Jeff Appel came on in relief of Carlson in the bottom of the third.  Appel kept the score at 5-3 setting the Legends down in order while striking out one.  The inning signified the first time Appel had returned to the mound since reinjuring his surgically repaired throwing shoulder during the 2015 season.  Happy day!!

The Outlaws also went quietly in the top of 4th, going down in order.

More scoring for the pesky Legends in the home half as Paul Oelrich was on to pitch for the Outlaws in the bottom of 4.  The Legends used 2 walks to plate one run and move the lead to 6-3. An entertaining nugget for the Outlaw faithful. Jeff Appel moved from pitcher to catcher in the 4th inning. You know it's hot if Appel is behind the dish. (NOT A CATCHER)  Ryan Carlson also went from pitcher to catcher in the third inning.  Not really a desirable position change at any level of baseball.

Sam Baumgartner represented the only base runner for the Outlaws in the 5th after being hit by a pitch.  Paul Oelrich also blanked the Legends in the bottom half.

Mike Roth opened the 6th inning for the Outlaws by legging out an infield single.  The Outlaws would make it four hits in a row as Ryan Meyer, Robb Larson, and Jason Beckett all followed Roth's lead and provided singles of their own.  Beckett's single would drive in Roth to make the score 6-4 and have the bases loaded with nobody out.  A huge opportunity missed though as the next three Outlaw hitters were retired in order and a huge scoring chance missed.

Two hits and a single, had the Legends scoring one run in the bottom of the 6th and taking a 7-4 lead into the 7th.

With one out in the top of the 7th Gabe Kerkaert continued to hit line drives as he singled to left.  Paul Oelrich then showed some old guy speed as he lined a triple to the right center field gap.  Kerkaert scored on the play to close the lead to 7-5.  The Legends pitcher was able to squash the rally however and end the game on consecutive ground outs.

Paul Oelrich led all Outlaw hitters going 2 for 3 with an RBI triple, and a walk.  Jason Beckett was 2 for 3 with an RBI and a run scored, Mike Roth was 2 for 4 with 2 RBI and a run scored, Gabe Kerkaert was 2 for 4 with 2 runs scored, Jeff Appel was 1 for 3 with an RBI, Robb Larson was 1 for 3 and Ryan Meyer was 1 for 4.  Sam Baumgartner reached twice with a walk and being hit by a pitch while scoring once.

With the loss the Outlaws fell to 3-4 on the year.  Next up they will host Apple Valley in Welcome on Saturday June 18th.  First pitch is at 1:00pm.
