Posted Jun 18/16 - 14 Walks in 5 innings Spells Doom as Apple Valley Spanks Outlaws

Jeff Appel was 2 for 2 as the Outlaws were limited to 5 hits in the losing effort...

Apple Valley-13 / Outlaws- 2

Not a great deal of fun stuff to write about in reference to this game.  Paul Ebeling got the nod for the hometown Outlaws as Apple Valley made their first trip ever down to Welcome MN.

The A's struck first in the top of the 1st using a walk and a hit to jump out to an early 1-0 lead.

The Outlaws looked like they would make it a game immediately answering with 2 runs of their own in the home half.  Gabe Kerkaert opened the frame with a line drive single to left.  Gabe quickly moved into scoring position displaying a bit of speed stealing second base.  A few pitches later Kerkaert scored on a misplay off the bat of Jeremiah Fitzgerald.  Fitzy moved himself into scoring position on the play and later scored to give the Outlaws a 2-1 lead.

Ebeling held the lead for the Outlaws in the top of the 2nd only allowing one base runner, a lead off walk.  The next three A.V. hitters were set down in order.

A bit of a rally with two outs in the bottom of the second as Jeff Appel and Travis Schuett both singled.  Both would move up to second and third on a passed ball, but would eventually end up stranded.

This is the point where we use the saying..."The Wheels Fell Off".  The A's plated 3 runs in the top of the third opening the inning with 2 singles, a walk and then a 2 RBI double.  Ebeling would end up limiting the damage to the three runs working out of a bases loaded jam.

Not much offensive output from the Outlaws from the 2nd inning on.  They were retired in order in both the 3rd and 4th innings.  The same could not be said for the Apple Valley A's.

Jeff Appel came on in relief of Ebeling in the 4th.  The A's welcomed him to the game and not in a kindly fashion.  The A's had an immediate runner after a lead off single.  The one highlight of the inning came here on a fine defensive play from Robb Larson at short-stop.  The next A's hitter (I have no names in the book) rolled a ball deep into the hole at short.  Diving towards third base, Robb fielded and hopped to his feet while firing a bullet to first,  nabbing the hitter by a half step.  Golf clap for Larson on that play.  There would be no clapping for what would follow.  Appel walked the next batter and then gave up a single and a 2 RBI double.  With the double the A's had moved the lead out to 5-2.  After walking the next batter and knowing it just wasn't his day, Appel gave way to Robb Larson.  Another base on balls and an error later, the A's had plated the two additional base runners and moved the lead out to 7-2.  Robb was able to get out of the bases loaded jam starting a 1-2-3 double play.  Larson to Williamson (Yes...Willy was catching) to Troy Appel at first base.  Phew...a tough frame.

More trouble in the top of the 5th for the Outlaws.  Larson lost the zone for a bit issuing 3 walks to open the frame.  Robb struck out the next A's hitter with the bases loaded.  After walking the next batter, Robb also decided he had had enough pitching.  Jason Beckett came on in relief of Larson and tried to end the second consecutive inning from hell.  Beckett would find a bit of trouble himself after walking the first batter and giving up a 2 RBI double to the next.  Two more walks would again load the bases for the A's.  Jason then found some magic and ended the misery by coaxing a pop up and snuffing the A's scoring with a strikeout.  When the dust settled the A's had a 13-2 lead.

A Jeff Appel single was all the Outlaws could answer with in the bottom of the 5th.  The game ended by 10 run rule and the Outlaws fell to 3-5 on the season.

Jeff Appel led all Outlaw hitters going 2 for 2, Gabe Kerkaert was 1 for 2 and scored a run, Mike Roth was 1 for 2, and Travis "Shooter" Schuett was 1 for 2 to round out the Outlaws hitting.   Jeremiah Fitzgerald scored the other run for the Outlaws.  We aren't going to talk about the Outlaws pitching on this day....

Moving on!!!
