Portland Rockets 8 Decatur Dirty Birds 6  July 13, 2011

Good morning baseball fans, it’s a beautiful day in Portland.  Tough assignment, beat your rival 4 times in a row, especially tough when at their home field and they bust out with a 4 run first inning.  Let’s call it a character builder.  Rockets rally and defeat the Decatur dirty birds 8-6 at bellmont h. s. last evening.  Decatur was league champion last year, Portland sweeps the regular season set 4 games to none.

Devin wilburn settles in after a rough start, pitches 4 scoreless innings, craig martin goes 2 inn. Giving up 2 runs, and Trevor kill closes it out 2 inn. 0 runs. But it wasn’t easy

The rockets started chipping away, that’s what good teams do 2 runs in the 2nd, one a towering home run blast by Thomas mccowan, 1 run in the 3rd, single by heath Williams he scores on a  bad bounce triple by ben smith , mark isenberg slams a double in the 4th to tie the score,  rockets take the lead on ben smith’s home run to left center.  Smith now with 7 home runs on the season. Rockets would tack on 2 more runs in the 6th on a couple errors and a beautiful steal of home plate by geoff bowers who timed perfectly the return toss back to the pitcher then came in the back door to literally steal a run . the iceing on the cake  mark the iceman  isenberg’s home run to left in the 7th.

Rockets comeback gives Portland the win again the 4th over Decatur this season.

And good chance we will see them again in playoffs next week.   And maybe even in regionals.

Playing at bellmont hs. Means shorter fences and the rockets hit 3 home runs, smith, mccowan and isenberg. And 2 double plays, roundtree to Williams to clem  and many broken dirty bird bats.   Heath Williams and isenberg each had 3 hits.  2hr 58 min in this game happy birthday ray gerber

Quite a day for geoff bowers and dan bollenbacher,,,,,they made the trip to Louisville and participated in a reds tryout and still made it back to Decatur for the game.

Good rocket crowd, they travel well, the maloys on hand, chance to visit with a former rocket of 11 years, terry bultemeier and wish his family well. Also our banker from the bank of Geneva, keith muhlenkamp and ava on hand.

Thanks to scott bollenbacher for having me on hand talking baseball with the rotary club. We recounted some of the great community sharing Portland has had with the rockets for 52 years.  The rotary club, what a unique fun bunch, some of portland’s finest. I enjoyed.

Rockets record now 26-9—division champs with a 14-4 mark, and did I tell you we swept Decatur 4 times this year.

More baseball this weekend.  And I cant wait I love to watch these guys perform,,brady roundtree from Anderson, a glove surgeon at shortstop,,brings memories of some rocket shortstops of the past, and we are talking some good ones, jack wood, dave neuenshwander, doug Bolton, pete milas, ryan rammel, mike moorman, wow

See the action Friday at runkle-miller field,,7 pm vs. the ft. wayne red sox,,,,,,Friday nite at the corner,  come have a picnic with us at the lunching pad----brad benbow the starter

Games sat at 2 vs. the Cincinnati chiefs  dan bollenbacher the starter
