Good morning baseball fans, it’s a beautiful day in Portland.  Portland rockets played in the national amateur baseball federation regional tournament this weekend in ft. wayne. The Portland team went 1-2 losing a heartbreaker 7-6 to the Pontiac parkers in 10 innings sat afternoon.  A walk-off 2 run home run off devin wilburn, 1st homer he has allowed this year, sends Portland home –a 3 ½ hour titanic struggle.  Portland rockets end this special season 38-12---one the best ever.  Portland’s wilburn actually put us ahead 6-5 in the top of the 10th  with a bases loaded walk, but the Pontiac-rhymes with cardiac-and the attack came in the bottom of the inning.

Rocket OF ben smith, a candidate for tournament MVP, hit a mammoth home run –one the many rocket faithful on hand will never forget,,,I know I won’t. estimated at 480 ft. into the treetops, to give starter eric van matre a 5-2 cushion. Ben now with 11 homers on the season went 6 for 12 with 5 rbi in the tourney.  Van matre, with the heart of a warrior, is a bulldog of a competitor. The ball state asst coach went 6 inn on 112 pitches , verlander of Detroit went 110 yesterday, struck out 7, 6 walks, 2 runs on 4 hits.  Van matre gave way to Trevor kill, and the cardiac began.  3 runs to tie in the 7th and 2 to win in the 10th.  Also pitching in relief, tyler Reynolds, tyler Holloway, and then wilburn.

Nate clem had 2 hits for Portland –pontiac out hit the rockets 10 to 9.

Portland goes 1-2 in tournament play—fri morning we lost to lamargarita 3-0 on just 3 hits.  Dan bollenbacher pitched well, but had just one bad inning.  His college coach  Hartman of lima northwest was on hand, other lima recruits from Portland, geoff bowers, ben smith and Thomas mccowan.  Nice Portland flavor with 4 rockets next spring.

Game 2 and facing elimination Portland responds. With a good rocket crowd on hand, yes Kristi Delaney was there representing sesame st., we turn the lights out on the Decatur season.  Portland wins 6-3 ---7th consecutive win over the nasty birdies this year.

Brad benbow, tyler Reynolds, eathan daggett and Trevor kill with the mound duties. Ben smith’s 2 run double in the 6th the key blow along with a tie breaking home run by  Dalton tinsely.

Hey, good to see doug tipton in ft. wayne sat at the football meeting for officials.  Go robotics, well done dude.

Rockets chance to advance came to a cardiac arrest vs. Pontiac. Season started in may –50 games and a whole lot of fun—the boys of summer become men we win 38 games (43 wins is the record in 1996 with the luce boys –I played back then) . memories aplenty from this Portland campaign—pitching, defense, more double plays than I can ever recall, every game a tradition-laced representation.  This team took more batting practice than all other rocket squads combined.  Thanks to Kevin mccowan—rest that arm for next year. The Portland rockets earned respect and many compliments throughout the year.  We finish the year 38-12 and stand Portland proud.. we ended with many shared thanks, hugs, a few tears but all were proud to be a Portland rocket.  Watch out next year, the rockettrain will roll again. Randy miller

Note:  rocket nation well represented in tournament field.  Pontiac player luke momrik was a rocket around 10 years ago ----he passed on many warm thoughts of rocket days and the impact of one ray miller on a team summers ago

Also on hand rockets on other teams, randy moss, matt ousley, garrett wiejak, bryan brudi, josh shatto,. Keith shepeard,

Happy birthday to old rockets mark flueckiger and Jason murdog murray
