Firecracker classic championship :  winner Portland rockets july 8, 2013

Good morning baseball fans, it’s a beautiful day in Portland.  For when the one great scorer comes to mark against your name, he asks not if you won or lost, but did you beat ft wayne?

Portland rockets take the 4th of july firecracker classic championship in ft  wayne this past weekend.  Rockets took the roughest route, losing the opener Friday nite 6-0 to the ft wayne jackers, then came back to win 4 games in a row staving off double elimination.

Friday nite in the tournament opener, down 1-0 going into the last inning dan bollenbacher pitched well enough to win. 95 pitches—rockets only had 1 hit, lose 6-0.

old rocket theme carried thru in the 4 wins that followed, dominant pitching, solid defense, and clutch hitting. In fact, baseball purists would have loved the pace and precision these games all less than 2 hours was played.

Saturday tyler Reynolds for Muncie south  throws a 2 hitter, dominant--wins 8-0 over harley brandt---keith shepards club. Keith called me last nite congratulating our championship club.  He remarked how after we lost game 1 to the jackers, they commented that this Portland team was not as strong as rocket teams past,  well that makes it all the sweeter.

The next 3 games Portland one in exciting fashion—all games score 2 –1.

Michael caley complete game over the ft wayne expos. Michaels first game back since getting married . 3 hits allowed. Zack tanner who had 3 hits in game one, makes a heroic relay throw from Justin Marrero to travis gray at the plate to nab the potential tying run to end the game.

Rockets again stay alive to championship Sunday; the rockets foe, the ft wayne jackers undefeated at this stage.  Portland must beat ft wayne twice to win the championship.

Dial up the stellar defense, dominant pitching and timely hitting.

Rockets win em both 2-1 .  crowned champions. Game one its portlands 29 year old mitch waters vs. 28 year old kris begly,  rockets score in the last inning on nick hollowells hard ground out, waters scoring from 3rd  then Dylan brammer from Mishawaka marian, our closer did his thing. In fact he closed again in the

Championship game,  I gave Dylan the game ball for some gutsy work – he closed the deal. Again rockets had to take the toughest route to climb this mountain, and standing right in the way,  28 yr old garrett wiejak,  former rocket pitcher and good friend.he beat us earlier in the year, but we our starter junior santos was dominant through 4 innings, then Quinton smith of Huntington got 2 out in the 5th , enter dan bollenbacher to finish this inning----remarkable considering 95 pitches on fri, then mitch waters returns to pitch the 6th and brammer closes ---close but no cigar jackers,,,this one belongs to the rockets.

In the 5 games, mitch waters led the offensive attack with 6 hits , 5 hits zach tanner , 4 by logan hug.  Those timely hits, several of those where run scoring doubles by Justin Marrero.  Rockets win last 3 games by a score of 2-1

Rockets have won 16 of the last 17 games, now 20-5 on the season.

Great to see dick crumback

With 19 players on hand this Portland team is strong ---and did you hear mention of  some of the ages.  Success stories by all our young men, however  old players are a little smarter.

Nice to see dick crumback at the ballpark—he is on the board of the northeast Indiana baseball association—his first act : to nominate ray miller to hall of fame, unanimously approved.  Also thanks for your support  Charlie and Vicki tague – happy birthday this week to my mentor fred freemeyer of ft. recovery.  Also happy birthday max ludy, love ya in Portland.

Rockets return to action in ft  wayne thurs at 7 pm vs  cougars then Michigan city trip this weekend.

Again rockets win firecracker classic  in ft wayne

Way to go Portland
