Posted Jun 7/10 - Grand Lake Mariners Take 2 from Rockets -- 4-2 and 4-0 on Sunday,June 6
Good morning baseball fans, it's a beautiful day in Portland!
Portland Rockets made the trip to Celina on Sunday; a delayed start at 4 pm due to rain.  We played the Grand Lake Mariners tough, but lost 4-2 and 4-0. Dan Bollenbacher, the starter in Game 1, pitched well enough to win but we made just enough mistakes to lose. Dan was a closer for us last year and turned starter and he was lights out through 5 innings, striking out 6 while giving up 3 hits. When he left in the bottom of the 6th inning, the score was tied 2-2. The Rockets had scored 2 runs in the 4th to tie the score on a double by Concepcion Morero. (This New Jersey native is awaiting the MLB draft. He should know in the next two days where he will be going).  He stole second and after Riley Muhlenkamp walked, he scored on Mark Isenberg's sac fly.  Walks to McCowan and John Clawson loaded the bases. A 2-out wild pitch scored Riley, but 2 strike outs and the rally fizzled. The 6th inning is where the plot thickens. Bollenbacher gives up a single after a foul popup is dropped. Their cleanup hitter and former Rocket launcher, Justin Painter, bunted but Dan hit him in the ribs. Bill Geeslin is summoned to pitch and errors the next man's bunt to to load the bases. Bill strikes out the next 2 hitters except the umpire squeezes and calls a ball on the 3rd strike. The Franchetti kid from BSU hits the next pitch for a hit to score 2. The 6th inning ends when we turn a nifty double play. Rockets had 3 hits in Game One, striking out 12 times. That Igelh pitcher from IU, 6'3" and 255 lbs southpaw, was tough.  Game 2 in Celina saw the Rockets again get 3 hits, 11 strike outs and the Mariners handed Portland their first shutout 4-0. Trevor Kill, of St. Marys, went 3 innings giving up 4 runs and broke 2 bats. (I love when our pitchers break their bats). Tyler Mills and Geeslin went the last 3 scoreless innings.
Speaking of the MLB draft, Coldwater native and University of Dayton produce, Craig Stammen got his Major League debut with Washington yesterday vs the Reds. I talked with Craig about five years ago about pitching for Rockets, but he said he was going pro. We are really hoping for the best for Concepcion Morero. The Indians asked how much it would take to sign him and he said enough that he didn't have to go back to school right away, so we will see! Good Luck to him!
Rockets open their home season tonight at 7 pm vs. the Napoleon RiverBandits. Come out and support our "Boys of Summer" and you know the price is right...NO CHARGE!  The ump in Celina told me at the golf course that at the golf course, he has measured over 7 inches of rain in 15 days; so let's hope our field dries out. Marilyn Maloy reports over 2 inches yesterday morning. We look forward to playing at our park tonight. You can't beat fun for a good time!
Trivia Question: Why are left handers called southpaws?
Answer: All diamonds are to have home plate positioned in the southwest corner. Therefore, first base runs due east, and hence left handers when on the mound, have their left arm on the south side...South Paw!
One of our southpaws, Tyler Palmer of Huntington, will pitch tonight in Portland in our home opener...Weather Permitting!
