Posted Jul 22/10 - Rockets lose to Decatur 8-5
Decatur 8 Portland 5 July 21, 2010

Good morning baseball fans, it’s a beautiful day in Portland.

Last evening the Decatur Dirty Birds avenged last week’s loss to the Portland Rockets with a 8-5 win at Bellmont High School. Rockets will look back on this one, chances squandered again and again. Decatur had 7 hits, to Portland’s 5, but Decatur issued ten walks, and Portland left 10 men on base. Heath Williams was the only Rocket with 2 hits. Heath led off the game with a single, a nifty bunt single by Chris Tillery, and then a sacrifice fly by Mark Isenberg (the ice man) and we are up 1-0. Starter Tyler Mills got touched up for 2 runs in the first, and 2 in the 3rd inning. Heath led the charges back when we Rocket rallied in the 5th inning. Williams, Bryan Brudi and Isenberg singled, 3 walks in a row and now we are down just 6-5 with bases loaded 0 out…(oh the agony)!! Johnson strikes out looking, Cook fouls off the squeeze bunt, then hits into a double play and our Rocket rally fizzles. Zero runs with the bases loaded. We would not score again. After Mills had 4 runs in 3 innings, Bill Geeslin had some tough luck; he gives up 4 runs in 3 innings. Five of those Decatur runs came with 2 outs and 2 strikes on the batter.

We just didn’t put the birds away. They have beaten us now 3 out of 4 this year. But wait the National World Baseball Congress is in Portland next week and we shall meet again. More on the tournament later!

Dan Bollenbacher pitched the final 2 innings and he was on. He struck out 4 of the 6 men he faced. Four of Decatur runs were unearned, Portland had 3 errors in the game. And I may mention as well, our fine fan contingent including the Maloys and their grandson, did not find favor with the umpire. Too many walks, too many balls, too many what was that’s...this epic struggle 2 hours 34 minutes goes to Decatur. Rocket record moves to 13-15.

Happy Birthday wishes go out to Michael Dull. This Berne native signed a scholarship to play baseball at Southern Alabama (while still in a Rocket uniform) after a game in Van Wert. He later played professionally for Montreal. Michael, one of the best hitters ever in Portland, along with several other South Adams players, brother Ron, Mark Flueckiger, Scott Dubach, Dave Neunschwander, and Jim Geeslin, were all instrumental in the Rockets 1st State Championship in 1985.

Next game two games are at home.

Double Dip Saturday and Sunday in Portland. Rockets play the Warsaw Indians Saturday at 1pm at Runkle-Miller Field. On Sunday, the Rockets host Taylor University. See ya this weekend for some old-fashioned hard ball at the corner of Western and Blaine. Don’t forget the carry-in after the game on Sunday.

Portland Rockets is the oldest semi-pro franchise in Indiana.

This is Randy Miller pg 14
