Posted Dec 29/10 - Pflugerville places second at Mansfield Rotary Invitational, dropping title game decision to Canyon; Adesuwa Ebomwonyi and Itiana Taylor named to All-Tournament Team
MANSFIELD, Texas -- State-ranked Pflugerville saw its seven-game win streak snapped by undefeated state power Canyon High School in the championship game of the 2010 Mansfield Rotary Invitational Wednesday night as the Lady Eagles posted a 57-41 win.

Pflugerville is now 18-4 while Canyon moves to 16-0. The Panthers are ranked No. 11 in the the State 5A TABC/Tex Preps Basketball Magazine poll, while the Canyon Lady Eagles hold the No. 2 ranking in the 4A division of that same poll.

Pflugerville trailed at the break, 31-24. Although they closed to one point late in the third quarter, the Panthers could not overcome poor free throw shooting and fourth-quarter turnovers. Pflugerville connected on an uncharacteristic 11 of 21 foul shots and turned the ball over 14 times.

Senior point guard Curtiesha Woods was the lone Panther in double-figure scoring. Woods had a season-high 14 points and added two steals. Woods was four for six from the field, sinking two 3-pointers, and was P'ville's best free throw shooter, going four-for-six from the foul line.

Two Panthers - senior forward Adesuwa Ebomwonyi and junior forward Itiana Taylor - were named to the All-Tournament Team as they led Pflugerville to a 4-1 mark in the Rotary Invitational and to P'ville's best-ever finish at the annual December tournament.

Ebomwonyi had five points and a team-high 10 rebounds against Canyon as she registered double-figure rebounding for the fourth time in five tournament games. Taylor added four points and eight rebounds against Canyon, while junior guard Ari Booth chipped in with eight points.

For the five-game tournament, Ebomwonyi registered team-highs of 59 points and 49 rebounds to average 11.8 points and 9.8 rebounds in Invitational action. Taylor collected 37 points and 36 rebounds to average 7.4 points and 7.4 rebounds per tournament game.

The Panthers played the entire tourney without leading scorer, rebounder and shot blocker senior post Nneka Enemkpali (injured).

Pflugerville will now break for the New Year's holiday and returns to action on Tuesday, Jan. 4 against District 16 5-A opponent Westwood. That game takes place at PHS's Panther Gym with a 7:30 p.m. start. The Panthers are 2-0 in District action.

The JV and freshmen teams also will be in action against Westwood. The two JV squads play at 6 p.m. while the Pflugerville freshman Gold (A) squad faces Westwood's freshmen in a 5:15 p.m. game. There is no Westwood freshman "B" team, so the Panther freshman Blue squad will not play.
