Posted Nov 19/11 - Panthers claim Greater Austin Area Tourney title with 57-19 win over Victoria East; Itiana Taylor named MVP, three other Panthers named to All-Tournament Team

AUSTIN, Texas-- The state-ranked Pflugerville Panthers completed a six-game tournament sweep by jumping out to a 31-2 lead at intermission en route to a 57-19 victory over Victoria East Saturday in the championship game of the Greater Austin Area Tournament. Panther senior forward Itiana Taylor was the unanimous choice as Tournament MVP. Taylor notched a double-double against Victoria East with 12 points and a game-high tying 10 rebounds for the Panthers, who improve to 9-0.

The three-day tourney concluded with all of Saturday's games (quarterfinals, semifinals and championship) at McNeil HS.

Taylor finished the six-game tourney with three consecutive double-doubles (double figure scoring and rebounding). The senior collected 74 points and 63 rebounds in tournament action to average 12.3 ppg and 10.5 rpg.

Joining Taylor on the All-Tournament Team for their impressive play over the tourney's six-game span were senior guards Jasmyn Booker and Ari Booth along with junior forward Jonelle Smith.

Head coach Nancy Walling's Panthers have played in all three title games of the Greater Austin Area tourney, winning the title in 2009 and finishing second a year ago.

The loss was the first for Victoria East, now 8-1. Victoria was shut out in the first quarter, falling behind 20-0 after the first eight minutes of action. They scored a field goal in the second quarter and just two more in the third period as P'ville led 41-6 with a quarter to go.

Junior forward Diana Omozee (12 points) joined Taylor in double-figure scoring in the finals and also logged a double-double, finishing with 10 rebounds as well. Booker added eight points while sophomore forward Jaden Sturm had a career-best nine rebounds off the bench.

Pflugerville returns to action on Tuesday, Nov. 22 when it hosts Midway HS in a 7 p.m. contest at the Panther Gym.

The Panther JV and freshman Gold (A) squads will play their Midway opponents at 5:30 p.m. and the freshman Blue (B) team plays at 7 p.m.
