Posted Feb 19/12 - Pflugerville advances to State regional quarterfinals with 65-60 overtime win over Klein Collins in area round play; No. 2 state-ranked Panthers face The Woodlands on Tuesday, Feb. 21
COLLEGE STATION, Texas-- Behind a game-high tying 20 points and a game-high 14 rebounds from senior Itiana Taylor and 15 points from senior guard Jasmyn Booker, No. 2 state-ranked Pflugerville recovered from a slow start and defeated Klein Collins 65-60 in State playoff area round competition Saturday night at A&M Consolidated High School. The Panthers turned in a six-for-eight free throw effort in overtime and out-rebounded the Lady Tigers 5-2 in the OT session to gain the victory. The win moves the Panthers, 39-0, into the State regional quarterfinals where Pflugerville will face No. 14 ranked The Woodlands (31-2) on Tuesday, Feb. 21 in a 7 p.m. contest. That game also will take place at A&M Consolidated HS.

In the overtime period, Klein Collins led by two, 60-58 before Panther junior forward Diana Omozee (eight points) tied the game with two free throws with 56 seconds to go. Following a Klein Collins missed jumper, Taylor grabbed the defensive rebound and was fouled on play 12 seconds later. Taylor sank the second of two free throws for a 61-60 lead. Strong defensive pressure forced a Klein Collins turnover and Omozee converted on a layup with 12 seconds left to push the lead to 63-60. The Lady Tigers then missed on a 3-point attempt, with Taylor again fouled as she pulled down the rebound with two seconds left. She hit both of her free throws to ice the game.

The Pflugerville-Klein Collins game was tied 57-57 after regulation. Neither team led by more than three points in the final two quarters of regulation in the back-and-forth battle. In the final minutes of regulation, Taylor gave Pflugerville a 56-55 lead with a driving layup with 1:11 to play. Neither team scored again until Panther junior guard Taylor Ross (nine points) made the second of two free throws to push the lead to 57-55. Klein Collins senior guard Veja Hamilton (20 points), a TCU signee, then sent the game into OT when she hit a straightaway jumper with 12 seconds to go in regulation. On its last possession, the Panthers had a shot blocked with three seconds to go which sent the game into the extra period.

The Panthers, who overcame a slow start which saw them trail 19-9, outrebounded the Lady Tigers 31-21.

Tuesday's game is a matchup between two district champions. Pflugerville went undefeated to clinch the District 16-5A championship (12-0) while The Woodlands was first in District 14-5A, also with a 12-0 mark. The Woodlands moved into the regional quarters with a 47-35 win over Round Rock HS in area round play.
