Posted Feb 21/12 - Pflugerville season ends with 51-43 decision to The Woodlands in State tournament regional quarterfinal play; Panthers finish 39-1
COLLEGE STATION, Texas -- With an offense which went stone cold in the final quarter, the No. 2 state-ranked Pflugerville Panthers saw their season come to an abrupt end Tuesday with a 51-43 loss to The Woodlands in State 5A regional quarterfinal competition. The game, played at A&M Consolidated, saw the Panthers score just two points over the final eight minutes as the usual high-powered Panthers struggled offensively. The game was knotted 41-41 after three periods.

The season ends an impressive run for Pflugerville, the undefeated District 16-5A champions who went 39-1. Junior guard Brenisha Payne finished with 11 points, the lone Panther in double-figure scoring, while junior guard Taylor Ross added eight points. Senior forward Itiana Taylor (six points) closed out her superb career with a game-high 15 rebounds.

The Woodlands, ranked No. 14 in the state and the District 14-5A champions, moved to 32-2 and were led by forward Anna Strickland who had a game-high 15 points.

The 39 victories were a Pflugerville school record as was the 39-game win streak. The Panthers fell just short of making the 17th regional semifinal showing in program history which included three in the last four years.

This was the third time in five years that Pflugerville and The Woodlands squared off in the regional quarterfinals. P'ville won the other two games in 2008 (54-49) and last year (62-47).

The Panthers turned the ball over just nine times, but three of those turnovers came in the final quarter when the shooting also went cold. For only the third time all season, the Panthers were out-rebounded (30-27) as well. The Lady Highlanders committed 15 turnovers.  The Woodlands was sharp from the free throw line, hitting 10 of 12 foul  shots while the Panthers went eight-for-12 from the line.
