Posted Dec 11/12 - Nationally-ranked Pflugerville posts 62-29 District win over Westwood, improves to 17-0

ROUND ROCK, Texas- Behind three double-figure scorers and a tough second-half defense, the nationally-ranked Pflugerville Panthers defeated Westwood High School 62-29 Tuesday in District 16-5A action to remain undefeated and move to 17-0. The Panthers held the Warriors to nine second-half points.

A trio of senior guard led the Panthers. Bre Payne netted a team-high 19 points while Amy Staha and Taylor Ross chipped in with 10 points each. Ross also pulled down seven rebounds and had three assists. Junior guard Alyssa Echols (four points) had team-highs of eight rebounds and four steals.

The win moves Pflugerville to 2-0 in the district. Westwood, which turned the ball over 13 times in the second half while scoring only two field goals and five free throws, is now 11-6 overall and 0-1 in district action.

After a tight first half which saw the Panthers take a 22-20 lead into halftime, P'ville outscored Westwood 17-5 in the third period to pull ahead by 14 (39-25). In the third quarter, the Panthers forced eight Westwood turnovers while Payne led the way with eight points and a steal.

In the weekly MaxPreps Xcellent 25 national poll, the Panthers sit in the No. 22 position. This is the first regular season weekly poll of the season and P'ville makes its first appearance in the poll as one of two Texas teams nationally ranked. Defending 5A champion Duncanville (16-0) is 11th nationally.

This week, Duncanville and Pflugerville rank first and second in the 5A rankings in both the TABC/Tex Preps Basketball Magazine rankings and Texas Girls Coaches Association (TGCA) rankings.

Pflugerville returns to play on Saturday, Dec. 15 in a non-district game at San Marcos High School. Varsity tip is at 12 noon


PFLUGERVILLE JV DEFEATS WESTWOOD, 43-18

The Pflugerville JV moved to 2-0 in district play with a 43-18 victory over Westwood, led by 12 points from sophomore guard Alyssa Washington and 10 points from freshman post Alexis Bryant.

The P'ville freshman Gold team and Blue teams dropped decisions to Westwood, 56-19 and 33-14, respectively.
