Posted Jan 11/13 - Undefeated Pflugerville stays atop District standings with dominant 72-41 victory over Cedar Ridge; Panthers head coach Nancy Walling collects 600th career win

PFLUGERVILLE, Texas -- Jumping out to a 14-0 lead, the No. 12 nationally-ranked Pflugerville Panthers dominated play on both ends of the floor as they posted a 72-41 District 16-5A victory over Cedar Ridge High School. Senior guard Brenisha Payne netted a game-high 16 points while senior forward Diana Omozee added 13 and senior guard Taylor Ross chipped in with 11 points and a game-high five assists as Panther head coach Nancy Walling notched the 600th win of her illustrious career.

The win lifts Pflugerville, ranked No. 12 nationally in the MaxPreps national poll and No. 2 in the Texas 5A rankings, to 27-0 and to 6-0 in the District. The milestone 600th career victory for Walling comes in her 24th year as Pflugerville's head coach and her 26th season overall as a varsity coach. In this span, Walling, who finished third in the Women's Basketball Coaches Association National Coach of the Year voting in 2009-10, has compiled a record of 600-246 through 846 games for a winning percentage of 71 percent.

The Panthers jumped out to a 14-0 lead , capped by a Payne three-pointer, with 3:05 left in the first quarter. Cedar Ridge scored its first points with 2:29 to go in the period. Pflugerville led 20-5 after the first quarter and led by 24 (37-13) at intermission. In the second period, P'ville forced Cedar Ridge into committing nine turnovers.

Cedar Ridge is now 22-5 overall and 4-2 in the District. The Raiders were forced 21 turnovers by P'ville's tough defense. The Panthers also controlled the boards, out-rebounding Cedar Ridge 28-11. The Panthers held Cedar Ridge to one offensive rebound.

The P'ville junior varsity, despite 14 points from freshman post Alexis Bryant, lost its first game of District play as Cedar Ridge posted a 53-39 victory. The Panthers freshman Gold (A) team posted a 66-50 win over the Raiders as Deliah Mooney had 27 points and Maykala Brathwaite had 18.
