AUSTIN, Texas -- Nationally-ranked Pflugerville jumped out to a 22-11 lead after the first quarter to set the tone en route to a 61-35 victory over Austin Bowie Tuesday in a UIL 5A State playoff Region II quarterfinal contest held at McNeill High School. Senior forward Diana Omozoee (pictured) netted a game-high 16 points and added four rebounds while senior point guard Taylor Ross finished with 12 points.
With the win, Pflugerville moves to 35-0 and advances to the State Regional Tournament semifinals (Final 16) on Friday, Feb. 22 for the 17th time in program history and for the fourth time in the last six seasons.
The Region II semifinals and finals take place at Baylor University's Ferrell Center on Friday and Saturday, Feb. 22 and 23. In Friday's 6 p.m. contest, the Panthers will face state-ranked Plano West (36-3) who defeated Mesquite Horn, 62-40, in a quarterfinal game Tuesday.
The other regional semi takes place Friday at 8 p.m., with the Regional final - and a berth to the State 5A Final Four State Tournament - contested at 6 p.m. Saturday.
Again Bowie, senior guard Amy Staha added eight points for the Panthers. Senior forward Jonelle Smith (six points) pulled down a game-best seven rebounds while junior guard Alyssa Echols finished with a game-high six steals.
The Panthers and Bulldogs were tied 6-6 three minutes into the game before the Panthers turned up the defensive pressure and forced Bowie into 15 turnovers in the quarter. P'ville closed out the period with a 16-5 run.
Pflugerville then extended the lead by allowing only two Bulldog points in the second period to lead at intermission, 39-13. In the last 13 minutes of the first half the Panthers out-scored Bowie, 33-7. Bowie ends its season at 20-13.
