Posted Aug 4/13 - Lakers Still Alive for State Tournament
The Waconia Lakers are still in the hunt for a State Tournament berth after the first weekend of the CRVL Regional Tournament. The Lakers started hot on Friday night vs. the Young America Cardinals. In the bottom of the first Ben Smothers and Ronnie Olson had back to back singles to start the inning. Chris Bullis then reached on an error scoring Smothers for the first run of the game, which was followed by back to back walks to put the Lakers up 2-0. After a YA run in the second the Lakers had a 4 run inning in the 4th started by a Robbie Smothers lead off home run. "Kevin Bullis showed me how to hit a home run at batting practice, so I give all the credit to him," Smothers commented on his first career Laker home run. The Lakers had rbi's from Nick Litfin, Olson and Train Lyons to go up 6-1 in the 4 run 4th. The score stayed stagnant as YA was baffled by Chris Bullis' pitching. "I was happy to get my first league win of the season," Bullis said. He went all 9 innings giving up one earned run and striking out 9. Lyons, Olson and B. Smothers all had multiple hit games. The Lakers outhit the Plato Blue Jays, but fell 6-1 Sunday afternoon. The Lakers got on the board first after a Jeff Chrest double, Ronnie Olson drove him in with a single up the middle. Evan Buhr was perfect through 5 innings until Plato had back to back hits tying the game at 1 a piece. The following inning a lead-off drag bunt led to an inside the park home run consisting of 3 Laker errors. The Lakers stranded a runner on 2nd in the top of the 8th and then a grand slam by Plato in the bottom half pushed the lead to 5 and Plato punched their ticket to the State tournament. Jeremy Salden led the Laker offense with 2 hits. "We hit the ball really well, but they kept making diving plays," Josh Lenz said after the game. The Lakers now play Friday night against Brownton at 8:00 pm in Glencoe. The winner of the match-up will be granted a state berth.
