Home runs, especially those of the walk-off fashion, were the high and low points for Campbellsville University in the Mid-South Conference Championship games Saturday.

The Tigers shelled out five bombs on the day, including a walk-off, three-run shot by Logan Smith to beat the University of Rio Grande, 6-3, and force an "if necessary" second MSC Championship game. However, the Tigers received a taste of their own medicine in the night cap, as MSC Player of the Year Tyler Schunk ripped a walk-off grand slam to lead Rio to its first MSC championship, 8-5.

Campbellsville scored nine of its 11 runs in the doubleheader off home runs.

Brian Chase started the home run derby with a two-run shot in the first inning of game one to give Campbellsville a 2-0 lead.

Rio tied the game in the third as Christian Frias beat a play at the plate on an RBI single by Francisco Ramirez, who later scored on a double by Schunk. Tyler Plumpton gave the Red Storm the lead in the fourth, driving in Chris Mahon with an RBI single.

The Tigers evened the score in the fifth with a solo homer by Michael Caleb.

CU starting pitcher Eric Mattos went the distance for in the 10-inning game. He allowed 10 hits, but walked only one and struck out nine to give CU a chance to win.

Smith delivered in the bottom of the 10th with a home run that scored Caleb and Chase.

In the night cap, Campbellsville continued to rely on the long ball, scoring its first run on a solo shot by Smith that tied the game, 1-1, in the fourth inning.

Schunk drove in the first two Red Storm runs with sacrifice flies in the third and fifth innings.

The Tigers tied the game, 2-2, on an RBI fielder's choice by Colin Bryanto score Luke Gadow. Nine-hole hitter Zac Townsend followed with a two-run homer to put CU in front, 4-2 in the sixth.

The Red Storm picked up a run in the bottom of the sixth to cut the lead to two, 4-3, on a two-out RBI single by Frias to score Ryan Yakura. Curtis Payne pitched out of the jam to strand two runners in scoring position. It was the only earned run of the day for Payne, who lasted six innings, allowing seven hits and two walks in the no-decision.

Schunk moved from third base to the mound after Townsend's homer. He finished the game out for his second win in the tournament, allowing just one run on an RBI single by Townsend in the eighth that put CU up 5-3.

Rio scored a run in the ninth ona wild throw to third by relief pitcher Spencer Frantz before loading the bases. Lunardi took over to face Ramirez with runners on second and third. After issuing the walk to Ramirez, Schunk took a 3-1 pitch over the fence in left for the win.

Rio improves to 47-11 on the year and advances to the first round of the NAIA Baseball Tournament, while Campbellsville drops to 40-20 and will await an at large bid to the national tournament. The final NAIA rankings will be announced Tuesday, May 11 and the complete NAIA pairings will be announced May 14.

During the tournament, Townsend led the Tigers with a .470 batting average (5-for-7), while Schunk led all four teams with nine RBIs, seven of which came Saturday. Jared Lunardi led the tournament for total strike outs, fanning 12 in two outings combined. Richie Rowland led the tournament with three doubles, while Smith led the tourney with three home runs and 16 total bases. Schunk was the only pitcher to record two wins.
