Woodland’s miraculous comeback victory over Washougal on Tuesday gave the Beavers a tighter grip on third place in the Greater St. Helens 2A League baseball standings. But the 11-10 win, which saw Woodland score seven runs with two outs in the bottom of the seventh, had the Beavers thinking bigger. “Now our kids want to battle for second place with Hockinson,” Woodland coach Owen Frasier said.
The Beavers (6-8, 3-4 in league) will get that chance when they visit the Hawks Friday for a doubleheader. They’ll enter that crucial twinbill brimming with confidence after Tuesday’s crazy rally. Woodland was down to its final out, trailed 10-4 and had Troy Wasson (2 for 3) at second base when the fireworks started. After a walk, Trevor Huddleston smacked a two-run double. Two more walks loaded the bases and an error scored a run. Colton Lucas hit an infield single to plate a runner, and yet another Panthers error scored two runs.
Cy Whitmire (3 for 5, two doubles) ended it with an RBI single, scoring Lucas with the game-winner. Freshman Austin Holcomb struck out two in a scoreless seventh to earn the win in his first varsity outing.
