Posted Jun 21/12 - Dodgers Earn Split on Island
The Langley Aldergrove Dodgers lucked out with the weather on Saturday in Chemainus and played extremely well in defeating the Cowichan Valley Mustangs 10-0 and 12-0.  The key to the effort was two stellar pitching performances by starters James Hardy and John Lipp who each went the distance in their respective games to earn a shutout and a win.  The starters were well supported by the Dodger defence (they made no errors on the day) and the bats which came alive to score 22 runs on 23 hits.  Notables on offence in the first game were Bailey Roope who went 2 for 3, Yi-Fan Pan, who went 3 for 3, and Ethan Kano McGregor who went 2 for 4 while playing well behind the plate.  In the second game, Notables on offense were Jaron Jeske who had 3 singles in 4 at-bats and Mitch Taylor who went 2 for 4 including a long triple to the fence.

On Sunday the Dodgers traveled to Nanaimo for a pair of games vs. the Pirates.  The defence was again strong as the Dodgers played 2 more error-free games.  In the first game the Langley Aldergrove squad had their chances on offence early, but some great throws by the Pirate catcher snuffed out the early inning threats and the home squad was able to stave off the Dodger comeback to seal a 5-1 victory.

In the second game both teams were forced to contend with some interesting umpire calls and a tight, but variable strike zone, which led to numerous base-runners.  Even then, the Dodgers were up 9-7 going into the bottom of the fifth inning.  Unfortunately, the home squad was able to take advantage of 4 Dodger walks in the bottom of the 5th inning and a squall of strong gusty winds blowing hard out to left field that came up quickly.  Two wind-assisted home runs later (including a grand slam and a 2 run shot), and the Dodgers were looking at the wrong end of a 14-9 score.  To their credit the Dodgers didn't quit and closed the gap in the top of the 7th on a bases-loaded single by Matthew "Sellie" Selinger that scored 2 runs. Unfortunately, the deficit was too large and Nanaimo held on for a 14-11 victory.  In addition to Selinger who went 3 for 6 on the day with 4 RBI's and a walk there were several offensive stars for the Dodgers.  In the first game Ethan "Big E" Kano McGregor went 2 for 3 with an RBI and Yi-Fan Pan followed up his impressive outings on Saturday with a 2 for 3 effort at the Plate.  Offensive stars in the second game included Justin "Arnie" Arnold, who went 3 for 3 (with 3 RBIs) and John Lipp who went 2 for 3.  Lipp also earned 2 RBI's.

Next Up:  Dodgers host Nanaimo Pirates and Ridge Meadow Royals on Saturday, then travel to Pitt Meadows for a Sunday Double Header against those very same Ridge Meadows Royals.
