Posted Jul 11/11 - Mt. Vernon claims championship at Redfield Tournament

REDFIELD — The Mount Vernon 15-16 VFW baseball team won the Maurice Ratigan Memorial Baseball Tournament this weekend.

Brian Vermeulen was named the tournament Most Valuable Player as he had eight RBIs and a three-run home run. He also pitched a two-hitter in the championship game.

The first two games were played Saturday as Mount Vernon beat Milbank 11-1. Deric Denning pitched seven innings and held Milbank to two hits. Cody Renken, Drew Frey, Joe Davis and Justin Davis all had two hits.

In the second game Saturday, Justin Davis pitched a no-hitter as Mount Vernon beat Orient/Miller 8-0. Justin Davis struck out seven batter and walked one.

In the championship game Sunday, Mount Vernon beat Big Stone City (Minn.) 8-1. Vermeulen had three RBIs in the win.

Mount Vernon is 18-3 on the year and plays at today at home with the 13- and -14-year olds playing at 5:30 p.m. against Lyman with the 15-16 game to follow.
