VIKING PRIDE: Be a part of something bigger than yourself
Congratulations to the eighth grade baseball team who finished the season as division champions and 2nd place in the conference tournament.
These young men represented our school with VIKING PRIDE, CLASS and the utmost SPORTSMANSHIP.
The Vikings won 13 straight games and finished the season 15 and 3.
Coach Graham would like to THANK YOU for a great year.
VIKINGS WIN STREAK ENDS IN CONFERENCE CHAMPIONSHIP
The Vikings matched their run total (8) from two earlier wins over Science Hill but the determined Hilltoppers would not quit. Heath Vance navigated through the Hilltoppers line up for two scoreless innings and a 4-0 Vikings lead. Science Hill scored their first three runs in the 3rd inning, but the Vikings put up two more in the bottom half to go up 6-3. “We have had good pitching and defense all year. Nine walks and four errors hurt us tonight, but these kids have had an impressive season.” Science Hill scraped another run in the fourth and three more in the fifth inning while the Vikings went hitless for three straight innings. “We got to the sixth inning down one run (6-7) and it’s a ballgame. Give Science Hill credit, they have been hot all week and they continued to hit the ball today.” The Hilltoppers took control of the game when they exploded for five runs in the sixth inning. Vance was able put up two runs in the bottom of the seventh to make it a 12-8 final. The Vikings were led offensively by two Josh Tolbert doubles, a Heath Vance triple and singles from Austin Delph, Ty Reynolds, Tyler Hardin, Jonathon Tester and Nick Snipes.
VIKINGS WILL PLAY FOR MIDDLE TEN TOURNAMENT CHAMPIONSHIP
The Vikings moved one game closer to another championship with Wednesdays 15-5 (run rule) victory over Elizabethton’s T.A. Dugger Middle School. Vance put up three in the first as Josh Tolbert and Ty Reynolds knocked in runs, but T.A. Dugger fought right back with three of their own in the bottom half. After a 3 up 3 down second inning, the Viking bats went to work scoring 5 in the third and 6 in the fourth to move ahead 14-3. Tolbert and Heath Vance led the offense with two hits each, including Vance’s fifth inning homerun (his 8th). Austin Delph, Channing Adams, Nick Snipes and Jonathon Tester also added clutch hits in the Vikings victory. "Tolbert did a great job on the mound today. It’s a nice luxury to have a group of kids you know can take the hill and throw strikes, we have that.” The Vikings will face Science Hill (12-11 winner over Kingsport’s Ross N. Robinson) in Thursdays Championship game beginning at 4:30.
VIKINGS ADVANCE TO SEMI-FINALS
The Vance Vikings opened the 2008 Middle Ten Conference Tournament with a tough 3-2 victory over Church Hill. Jonathon Creger got the start for the Vikings and put in 2 2/3 innings giving up just 1 run. “We have to get in 21 innings over three straight days, that means we have to manage every arm we have. Jonathon did exactly what we needed him to do today and I am proud of him.” Creger gave way to Jonathon Tester, who stepped on the mound and over powered the Panther bats. Tester gave up no hits (NONE,ZERO,ZIP) while striking out six in the final 4 1/3 innings. The battery of Tester and Austin Delph contributed two hits each providing just enough offense to advance the Vikings into round two.

VANCE VIKINGS FINISH REGULAR SEASON 13-2 ON ELEVEN GAME WIN STREAK
VIKINGS KNOCK OFF INDIAN TRAIL ON T.H.S. DIAMOND
The Vance Vikings wrapped up another divisional championship and moved the win streak to eleven straight with a 10-3 victory over Indian Trail on Thursday. “We’ve played better. I hope they’re focused on the tournament.” Offensively the Vikings were powered by the middle of the line-up where Josh Tolbert (2-2), Ford Litton (2-4) and Ty Reynolds (3-3) produced nine RBI’s. Channing Adams, Heath Vance, Tyler Hardin, Jonathon Tester and Brett Golackey all added hits for the 13 and 2 Vikings. Tolbert took over on the mound for Jonathon Tester in the second inning and held Indian Trail to 1 run on just 4 hits the rest of the way. The Vance Vikings will open the Middle Ten Conference Tournament on Monday at 4:30 vs. Church Hill.
VANCE SWEEPS DOUBLE HEADER FROM UNDEFEATED HILLTOPPERS
The Vikings traveled to Johnson City on Monday to face undefeated Science Hill. Science Hill is no longer undefeated. The Vikings played as though they are a team on a mission. “This team has set some goals, we talk about them every day and every day they work to make sure we put ourselves in a position to accomplish those goals.” Vance put up 2 in the first, and then the Hilltoppers quickly went up 3-2 in the bottom half. Vance answered back with 4 in the second off a Brett Golackey sacrifice bunt, a Channing Adams single and a clutch two out double from the red hot Josh Tolbert (16 for his last 19). When the Vikings took the field in the bottom of the second inning, Heath Vance replaced a tender armed Jon Tester on the mound and Nick Snipes was in right field due to another injury. “We had to move some people around early to stay in this thing (six players changed positions). “When you’re in a heavy weight slugfest like this you can’t afford to fall behind. Our kids made the adjustments and I am so proud of how they stepped up”. Science Hill scored 2 early in the second to make it 6-5 then Heath Vance settled in and stuck out 6 of the Hilltoppers final 13 batters to lock down an 8-5 game one victory.
In game two, Josh Tolbert took the bump for the Vikings and proceeded to hold Science Hill to just 2 hits in 3 strong innings. Vance dominated the Hilltoppers 8-1 behind good pitching, a strong defense (turning 4 double plays) and base runners that constantly pressured the opposing defense. “Tyler Hardin played a vital roll tonight. Defensively he made some huge plays in center including a game ending beauty in the opener. Offensively he added three hits in the nightcap, but most importantly he has been a part of providing that positive attitude this team is playing with right now. We tell them to believe in the guy next to you, believe something good is going to happen and right now they are playing as though they believe”. Ford Litton came in with an 8-1 lead to close the final two innings. Litton gave up no runs and faced just seven batters while sealing the double-header sweep.
Vance will play host to Indian trail at 5:00 Thursday in their regular season finally. COME SUPPORT THE VIKINGS AS THEY START THEIR CAREER ON THE TENNESSEE HIGH SCHOOL DIAMOND AT HAYNESFIELD.
WINNING STREAK CONTINUES
The Vikings extended their win streak to eight straight with Thursday nights double header sweep over Unicoi Co. Vance trailed game one 5-2 through three innings before putting the Blue Devils away 10-5. A two RBI triple by Josh Tolbert along with clutch hits from Ty Reynolds and Jonathon Creger led the Vikings to an eight run fourth inning. Heath Vance stepped in to close the door by striking out 5 of the 7 blue Devils he faced.
Game 2 was a little more comfortable as Tolbert hit another triple scoring Austin Delph and Channing Adams before crossing the plate himself on a Jonathon Tester single. An Austin Delph triple, a Ty Reynolds double, a base knock from Eric Henry and two singles each from Heath Vance and Josh Tolbert plated six more runs in the Vikings 9-2 victory. Ford Litton went the distance on the mound, striking out 3 and giving up only 2 hits.
BORDER WAR, BELONGS TO TENNESSEE.
The storied history of “V-T battles” received a new chapter on Tuesday. When you read the book on this one it will be dominated 11-1 by the Tennessee kids. John Tester stood on the hill for Vance striking out five, while holding the Virginia Bearcats to just 3 hits and picking up the complete game (run rule) Victory. Tester helped himself by adding two big hits to the Vikings total, but benefited most from a strong defense, which committed zero errors and repeatedly made the big play. In the third inning, Virginia Middle had two runners on base and the top of the line up at the plate. Already down seven to one, the rally was stomped out when the Bearcats tried to score on a base hit to center field. Tyler Hardin charged the ball and showed off what may be the strongest arm in the league as he gunned down the runner five feet short of home plate. “We have been hitting the ball a little, but with our strong pitching, it’s a defense like this that will make us a winner down the stretch. Our kids are focused right now, we have to keep them at that level for two more weeks.” The Vikings (8-2) were led offensively by Josh Tolbert’s three hits. Tester, Channing Adams and Heath Vance added two hits each. Austin Delph, Ty Reynolds, Ford Litton, Tyler Hardin and Bret Golackey made sure that every Viking in the line up went home with at least one hit in this win over the cross town rival Bearcats.
The Vance Vikings Baseball team has become just that… a team.
Friday night, the Vikings (7-2) took their show on the road to Lebanon VA. “When you’re on the road, we talk about starting strong and putting yourself in a position that calls can’t hurt you. Tonight, the kids hit it early and got in a groove. It’s fun to watch when they execute the things you practice.” When the curtains closed, the Vikings road show had put up 28 runs. Heath Vance led the offensive explosion by going 5 for 5, hitting his sixth home run and scoring in all five plate appearances. Austin Delph went 3 for 4 (all doubles) and has firmly established himself as the table setter since being moved to the lead off spot (.644 On Base %). Brett Golackey contributed three hard hit singles; Channing Adams and Ty Reynolds added two hits each. Josh Tolbert was impressive on the bump giving up just two hits while striking out six Pioneer batters. “Lebanon is a pretty good team and the lefty they threw tonight was not bad, our kids just stepped it up. I am so proud of their effort level lately. Hopefully we will peak down the stretch and make a strong run in the playoffs.” The Vikings will square off against cross town rival Virginia Middle School Tuesday.
VIKING PRIDE: Be a part of something bigger than yourself.
The theme is beginning to take effect. Team play was the key as every player on the roster contributed to the Vikings 10-0 and 11-1 victories over Unicoi Co. The Vikings (6-2) closed out their home schedule behind the strong arms of Michael Trump and Ty Reynolds. Trump made his first start ever, impressively striking out four of the first six batters he faced on the way to a one hit shutout. Reynolds took to the hill in game two and the end result was another Vikings complete game victory. Vance goes on the road Friday for a tough non-conference match up against Lebanon Middle School.
“VIKING BASEBALL” ON DISPLAY
Vance Middle School (4-2) opened division play in style with TWO impressive wins over a very talented T.A.Dugger team on Tuesday. In game one, the Vikings played small ball early to manufacture a run as Josh Tolbert sacrificed Ford Litton into scoring position after a walk. Heath Vance reached on an error and Litton scored on a passed ball. Zero hits… one run. The team concept was evident the entire game as the Vikings turned just four hits into a 4-2 WIN. In game two, Heath Vance put the Vikings on the board with a first inning bomb (his 5th). Josh Tolbert followed with a single, stolen base and run scored on Jonathon Tester’s RBI single. Brett Golackey, Ty Reynolds and Ford Litton contributed key hits and Austin Delph continued with his hot bat (7 hits in 3 games). The Vikings play two at home Thursday versus Unicoi Co. COME OUT TO THE BALLPARK AND SUPPORT THE VIKINGS IN THEIR FINAL HOME STAND OF THE 2008 SEASON.
Vikings fall to Ross N. Robinson
Kingsport’s Ross N. Robinson took advantage of ten walks and added 15 hits to defeat Vance Middle School 16-8. The Vikings next game is 4:30 Tuesday when they play host to Division foe T.A.Dugger from Elizabethton.
VIKING BATS; back in the swing of things
Heath Vance wasted no time getting started as he belted a 350ft. blast in the top of the first inning. The Viking’s looked strong at the plate (18 hits) and in the field (1 error) en route to a 12-2 win over Kingsport’s Sevier Middle School. Jonathon Tester moved to 2 - 0 on the mound as he and Aaron Modzel combined to hold Warrior batters to just three hits while striking out 10. The Vikings are back in action on Tuesday, April 1 when they play host to the Ross N. Robinson Redskins at 4:30.
VIKINGS FALL TO COLONIAL HEIGHTS
The Viking’s typically strong defense failed to show up for Tuesday’s conference match up with Colonial Heights. Heath Vance and Josh Tolbert combined to strike out nine Charger batters, but six walks and five errors led to a Viking’s 10-4 loss. Offensively, the Viking’s were glad to see Jonathon Tester’s two strong hits and another three RBI homerun off the bat of Heath Vance. Tyler Hardin and Channing Adams also added hits for the Vikings who fall to 1 win and 1 loss in conference play.
VIKINGS WIN SEASON OPENER!
The VIKINGS played great defense behind pitchers Jon Tester, Aaron Modzel and Jonathon Creger. Offensively the Vikings were powered to a 13-1 victory by the big bats of Ford Litton and Heath Vance. Litton turned in a 3 for 3 day including two doubles and Heath Vance put the game away with a big 3 run homer. Bret Golackey, Austin Delph and Nick Snipes also contributed key hits for the 1 and 0 Vikings.
