Scott has been named the 2010 PWB Player of the year. This annual award is voted on by the team managers from around the province. Scott had a superb year, leading the Angels in Pitching with big wins in the Annual Canada Day Blast Tournament in Kelowna, Provincials in Trail and helped the Burnaby Bulldogs win the 2010 Baseball Canada Senior Men's Championship. Scott had a big win over Ontario (6-0) only giving up 2 hits. Scott was also a member of the Prince George Axemen at the 2009 World Baseball Challenge. Congratulations also goes out to Wayne Vickers of Nanaimo, Ashton Florko of Trail, GRaham Campbell if Victoria and Brandon Hunter of Prince George for being nominated for this award.
CONGRATULATIONS TO THE BURNABY BULLDOGS - 2010 Baseball Canada Senior Men National Champions.
After a scare in game 1 in which the Bulldogs lost 8-0 to New Brunswick (Chatham), the Bulldogs would go onto win 5 straight culminating in the Championship Win over the host from Dartmouth 1-0. Over the course of the week, the Bulldogs beat Alberta (Red Deer) 8-4, Ontario (Ilderton) 6-0, and Nova Scotia (Halifax)13-5. Please see below from www.baseball.ca/seniormen:
BC spoiled the party as the blanked the host Dartmouth club 1-0 at the Senior Men’s championship in Dartmouth, NS. A pitcher’s duel between Dartmouth’s Merek Deska (Toronto, ON) and BC’s Steve McCrea (Coquitlam, BC) ensued that saw only six hits in total during the game. The lone run came in the 4th inning when Kevin Atkinson (Surrey, BC) belted a 2-2 pitch out of the ball park for a solo homerun. McCrea was virtually perfect the rest of the way as he only allowed one base runner in his last three innings of work, which came on a walk. Dartmouth’s best chance to score came in the 1st inning when they had runners on first and second with two out but were unable to advance them any further.

In dominating fashion, the Sr Blaze captured the 2010 Western Canadian Baseball Championship over the weekend. The Blaze had an offensive outburst over the 5 games in Muenster, SK, outscoring their opponents 42-10. Blaze pitching was solid and the team was lead by the strong hitting performances of Ashton Florko who hit 4 home runs and Nate Corscadden who lead the tournament in hitting with a .667 average. One of the tournament highlights was a 13 inning affair in pool play versus Manitoba which started on Saturday Aug 14 at 5pm and finished the following morning with Blaze coming out on top 5-3. Brent Suecroft in the 16-0 win over Saskatchewan threw only 44 pitches. Nathan Kirby was outstanding in relief, appearing in 4 of the 5 games, coming in at crucial times, and shutting the door each time. The Blaze additions of Ashton Florko from Trail and Scott Tulloch, Kyle Iwata, Kevin Powell, Chris Foreman and Ryland Kathrein from Coquitlam, all played a large part in the Blaze capturing the Championship.
Over the August long weekend, the Burnaby Bulldogs once again captured the Provincial Title. They will represent BC next year at the 2011 Baseball Canada Senior Nationals. They will also represent BC this year at Nationals as they were the winners of the Provincial Title last year. That makes it 2 years in a row. Congratulations again!
Congratulations to the Burnaby Bulldogs, 2009 BC Senior Men's Baseball Champions.
Led by a strong pitching performance of Bulldog starting pitcher Steve McCrea, the Bulldogs played the Fraser Valley Red Sox in the Championship final and came out with a 3-2 victory. The Fraser Valley Red Sox are congratulated on making the finals as they had to win a quarter final and semi final just to reach the finals. The Bulldogs gained a bye to the final on their strong pool play going 3-0. The Bulldogs now have a year to prepare for the 2010 Senior Nationals in Windsor, Ontario. BC Senior baseball would like to give a big thank you to the staff and volunteers of the Nanaimo Coal Miners for putting on one of the best Provincial Championships in recent memory. Update Jun 28/09 - COQUITLAM WINS ANNUAL CANADA DAY BLAST IN KELOWNA
Congratulations to the Coquitlam Angels for winning the Annual Canada Day Blast Tournament in Kelowna. This tournament is one of the best tournaments in Canada. A congratulations also needs to be given to the PMBL as the PMBL took home the top 3 places with the Burnaby Bulldogs coming in 2nd, and the Fraser Valley Red Sox coming in 3rd. All 3 PMBL went 3-0 and dominated their respective pools, by giving up a total of only 11 runs between the 3 teams. Each PMBL team also won their 1st playoff game going 4-0 before the Red Sox lost to the Coquitlam Angels in the semi-finals. The Kelowna Jays came in 4th. A great weekend was once again had by all the attended this annual event.Update Jul 7, 2008

For the past two years, the Shallard and Shallard Tigers and Westwood Sports Pub Royals have been the big dogs of the Prince George Senior Baseball League. Seven other teams will be nipping at their heels this season, but the Tigers and Royals have the teeth to maintain their positions of dominance.
As for the Royals, Bucky Schmidt, the 2007 league MVP, wears their uniform. Paul Wilson, Chris Chapman and Jason Cage -- the top pitcher during the regular season -- help to round out the Westwood roster. The Tigers and Royals won’t have to wait long to renew acquaintances. They’ll play each other on Wednesday, with the opening pitch slated for 9 p.m. Tuesday’s season-opening game will see the Gladiators step onto the field against the 15- to 18-year-old Prince George Citizen Knights at 6:30 p.m. In the first half of Wednesday’s double bill, the Pirates and the That’s Poker/TQ Insulators Titans will do battle. Yorston, who replaced Dave Barry as league president, considers his own team -- the Gladiators - as an up-and-comer. Last season, the Gladiators finished at 11-11 and didn’t really have a true pitcher on their roster. They were forced to get by on the arms of Yorston, Corey Bonnar and Chris Martin. But, this season, the Glads will be able to send hard-throwing Graham Allard out to the hill with regularity. Allard played for the BID Construction Grays in the PGSBL and B.C. Junior Baseball Association last season. The Allard twins, including Chris, were the Sedins of last year’s PGSBL draft, going 1-2 in the selection process. “With Graham throwing around 90 (miles per hour), I think that will help quite a bit,” Yorston said with a laugh. Other teams in the league are the Panago Predators and Quesnel Jacks. Each team will play a 24-game regular season, which ends Aug. 9. Playoffs will follow.
The league is looking a year ahead to the World Baseball Challenge, an international event that will grace Citizen Field for the week of July 18-25, 2009. The six-team tournament will require many permanent and temporary upgrades to the facility, while local players are looking for an opportunity to play for the Axemen all-star team in that event.
Local radio station CFIS 93.1 FM is scheduled to broadcast selected games during the 2008 PGSBL season. “I think it’s really good,” Yorston said. “Lacrosse gets a lot of exposure. They do a great job and I think we’re right in behind them now. We’ll get more people out, get more kids interested in ball -- that would be nice, too.” |

USA representative confirmed for WORLD BASEBALL CHALLENGE
It is with tremendous excitement that it is announced the famed RENO ASTROS BASEBALL CLUB will be the United States representative for the 2009 WORLD BASEBALL CHALLENGE, set for July 18-25, 2009 in Prince George, B.C., Canada.
The Reno Astros, managed by Matt Konopisos (k-nop-SIS), will wear USA uniforms, and, as they have done so many times in the past will represent their country proudly at Prince George Citizen Field, the site of the WORLD BASEBALL CHALLENGE.
The Astros have won 10 world-level championships in their history, and their all-time roster includes an impressive list of former and current Major League Baseball players. Current Boston Red Sox ace Josh Beckett, the MVP of the 2003 World Series for the Florida Marlins, is among a list of 20 former big-league players and more than 80 professional athletes to have taken the field in the Astros uniform. Toronto Blue Jays first baseman Lyle Overbay and Arizona Diamondbacks lefty Doug Davis have played for Konopisos. The Astros are always among the contending teams at the famed Grand Forks International baseball tournament, winning it twice, and Beckett once pitched the Astros into the championship final with a performance the Grand Forks fans won’t soon forget. His catcher in that memorable 1999 semifinal win. Current Atlanta Braves receiver Corky Miller.
“We are excited to accept the invitation to represent the United States in Prince George – this is a unique opportunity to face some of the best teams in the world and there is no way our program could turn that down,” said Konopisos.
“We played in the 2002 World Baseball Challenge, in the same pool as the Prince George Panago Axemen, and the level of baseball is always outstanding when we come to Canada. The people of Prince George are in for a real treat, and with the international lineup of teams being confirmed for 2009, it will be a tremendous challenge for our program. We like the tournament format, with every team facing each other, and a fair but demanding final playoff day.”
The Astros beat the Axemen 2-0 in that 2002 meeting. Former AAA player Tommy Mitchell, a mainstay with the Astros and the brother of former National League MVP Kevin Mitchell, hit a towering home run over the left-field fence for the Astros in that game.
“The name Reno Astros, and the name Matt Konopisos, they have come to be synonymous with ‘class’ in amateur and semi-pro baseball circles,” said WBC marketing director Chad Craig.
“This is a team that has proven it can beat national teams from around the world in high-pressure situations, and just the fact that they get invited to the best tournaments tells you what kind of leadership they have. We can’t wait to see them on the field in 2009.”
The Reno Astros, based out of Moana Stadium in Nevada, have been the focus of a cable television reality series called The Dugout Show, with episodes available through their web site (below) or ITunes (http://www.seerenotv.com/thedugout.xml)

The confirmation of the Astros brings the tournament lineup to four teams – Reno Astros (United States), Team Canada (Baseball Canada), Prince George Panago Axemen (host), and Taiwan. The Taiwanese baseball federation has indicated its interest in participating and will give a firm answer by early 2008, needing that time to go through regular scheduling meetings at the national level. Invitations have gone out to, among other nations, Cuba, Japan, South Korea, China, Australia and the Dominican Republic. The plan is for a five-team event, with a schedule allowance to move to a six-team format.
In other WBC news, the tournament committee plans to unveil the tournament logo shortly, news that will coincide with the naming of the tournament’s title sponsorship. Ticket information will be released in January, as will the tournament marketing package.

New Westminster Royals win provincials

It took them two tries, but the New Westminster Royals were crowned B.C. champions at Prince George Citizen Field.
Early Monday afternoon at the B.C. Senior Baseball Association provincial tournament, the Royals lost 3-1 to the Victoria Mavericks, a result that forced a second and deciding game for the tournament title and a trip to the Baseball Canada Senior Championship.
In the do-or-die game, the Royals rode a complete-game performance by pitcher Andrew Brock to a 7-2 victory.
"It feels awesome," said Brock, who gave up six hits on the way to the win.
"We worked real hard for this. (In the) regular season, we were inconsistent at best, but when it came down to it, when it mattered, we were the best team out there. We were 9-1 in elimination games (this season), so we love to play under pressure."
The Royals, 3-0 in round robin and 2-1 winners against the Burnaby Bulldogs in a Sunday night semifinal to earn a bye to the final, looked emotionally flat in Monday's first game against the Mavericks.
"We were a little bit complacent," said the 23-year-old Brock, who also earned a complete-game 6-2 victory against Victoria in round-robin play.
"We'd already beaten them once in the round robin, so there was definitely that attitude. We took them a little bit lightly and they came fired up, ready to go, and they beat us."
In the game that mattered most, Brock kept Mavericks hitters quiet almost the entire game. The only blemish on his performance was giving up a solo home run to Dustin Oliver in the bottom of the second inning.
"I've been the big-game pitcher all summer," Brock said.
"I was our go-to guy in playoffs, our go-to guy in tournaments. I asked for the ball and they gave it to me and we got it done. I have to give credit to my offence because you can't win 0-0."
The big inning on offence for the Royals was the top of the fourth, when they pushed five runs across the plate. New Westminster took advantage of a couple Victoria errors, a pair of walks and a hit batsmen. They also rapped out two hits, the key one a bases-clearing double to right centre field by Mike Eskildsen. His blast, which came in the first at-bat against reliever Clayton Frank, turned a 3-1 lead into a 6-1 advantage and the Mavericks never recovered.
"He (Frank) really wasn't going to give me anything (to hit) and I saw something away (from the plate)," Eskildsen said.
"Instead of rolling over and getting a fly ball, I went with it and luckily it went into the gap and rolled to the 382 part of the field. That's a good time for that hit. After you get that hit, with the pitching staff we've got, they're going to shut the door."
The Mavericks got one run back in the sixth inning and the Royals scored one more in the seventh. In the bottom of the seventh, Scott Caldwell became the final out after hitting a ground ball to first base. Including a 5-4 win against Burnaby in the morning, the Mavericks played three games on Monday and ran out of magic and healthy bodies.
"We were tired, and unfortunately the injury bug kind of bit our team -- took three key guys out of our lineup (designated hitter Gautam Srivastava, DH Steve Lowe and shortstop Sean Murphy)," said Brad Franklyn, the fifth of five pitchers Victoria used in the game.
"(Pitcher) Adam Kerr was hurt as well but pitched well, fought through it. Myself, I tore a calf muscle. I think if we were healthy it would have been a different outcome or at least a little closer."
The Prince George Panago Axemen were in a round-robin pool that included New Westminster and Victoria. Both teams beat the Axemen by a single run. Saturday night, the Royals defeated the Axemen 2-1 in an extra inning. On Sunday, the Mavericks edged the home team 5-4.
At the end of the tournament, Sean Camilleri of the Royals was named most valuable player while Mike Styrna of Burnaby was the top hitter. Jay Cook of the Axemen was picked as the all-star second baseman. Other all-stars were John Margaritis (catcher, Victoria); Scott Nehaj (first base, New Westminster); Wayne Vickers (third base, Nanaimo); Murphy (Victoria, shortstop); Camilleri (outfield, New Westminster); Bobby Wagner (outfield, New Westminster); Dustin Oliver (outfield, Victoria); and Graham Campbell (pitcher, Victoria).
The Baseball Canada Senior Championship is Aug. 23-28 in Brandon. The Royals will represent B.C. at that tournament, while the Mavericks will head to Saskatoon to play in the Western Canadian championship on the Aug. 19 weekend.

Chris Tibbles made history on Tuesday night as he No-Hit the Richmond Auto Budgies in PMBL regular season play.
Tibbles faced only one hitter over the minimum while striking out 10 in his most impressive start of the year.
Tibbles, who also took a no-hitter in a game against Burnaby in 2005 into the 7th inning, has been with Surrey since joining the league in 2002 after his college career took him to Douglas College.
The Red Sox went on to win the game 3-0.

The Surrey Red Sox have won the Kamloops May Long Weekend Tournament. The Red Sox secured the championship by defeating the new Kamloops Sun Dogs team in the final at Norbrock Stadium today by the score of 4-3. This come from behind victory was sparked by veteran Clay Premack who started the comeback by leading off the 6th inning with a double. The Sox then pushed 4 runs across in the inning to make Dillon Reynolds a winner.
The path to the final also saw the Red Sox defeat the Calgary Pirates in the opener by a score of 11-3 on the strength of Mike Giesbrecht’s relief work. Mark Chernos was the eventual winner in game two as the Sox beat the Sun Dogs 4-0 in round robin play.
The only blemish on the teams weekend record occurred as the Surrey boys lost a tight game to last years Junior Baseball Association of BC champions, the Kamloops Sun Devils, 4-2.
Congratulations to the Red Sox on this early season success.

Burnaby Bulldogs pitchers Mike Sinclair and Keith Fong teamed up for a No Hitter in the clubs first game of the 2006 PMBL season. The 9-0 game was shortened by the leagues 8 Run rule. The feat, not duplicated by any Bulldog since Barry Demarco's gem in the 1997 PMBL playoffs in Richmond, came against the young Richmond Auto Body Budgies.
Sinclair, started and went 4 innings, walking 2 and striking out 3. Fong came in and threw his second perfect outing in as many tries by setting the Budgies down in order in the 5th inning.
Congratulations to Mike, Keith and the entire Bulldogs team on this rarest of accomplishments.

The New Westminster Royals and pitchers Trevor Johnstone and Craig Mosher No-Hit the Surrey Red Sox in the opening game of the 2006 PMBL season.
In this clubs first game as the New Westminster Royals, the pair of Johnstone and Mosher allowed only 2 baserunners in the 3-0 win. Johnstone, who started and went 5 innings, settled in nicely after a briefly shaky start. Mosher, replacing the starter in the 6th inning, and simply shut down the Surrey offense the rest of the way on route to the rare firsts.
The game, only an hour and twenty minutes in length, was one for the record books by all accounts. Congratulations are in order for Trevor, Craig and the entire Royals team.

Regular season play began in both the lower mainland's Pacific Metro Baseball League and the interior's Okanagon Major Baseball League this past weekend.
PMBL action saw New Westmister split with Surrey and the OMBL schedule had Vernon and Kamloops each win a game. More details can be found at the PMBL and OMBL web pages.
Nanaimo begins the 2006 campaign with a double header in Burnaby this weekend while Victoria looks to open up their season in the first week of May.

The Panago Cup Series was launched today as both the Kamloops Black Sox and the Prince George Panago Axemen announced that they will play a 6 game series leading up to the 2006 BC Senior Baseball Association Provincial Championships in PG in August. This idea, bourne by Axemen Manager Jim Swanson and Black Sox General Manager Steve Peterson, will see the teams play two games in Kamloops as part of a 3 team, 4 game weekend, that also sees the Vernon Diamondbacks mix in. The final series of games will be played in PG June 17th and 18th at PG Citizen Field.
These two teams have also teamed up to put a combined team into the 3rd annual Canada Day Blast tournament in Kelowna on the July long weekend.

Prince George Citizen Field will be the name for the new senior men’s baseball stadium in Carrie Jane Gray Park.
The Citizen struck a deal with the city to have the naming rights to the facility for the next 10 years, it was announced Monday. Money from the first three years of the deal will be used to buy an electronic scoreboard for the stadium.
"It is very exciting for The Citizen and our new owners (Glacier Ventures International) who loved the idea," said the newspaper's publisher, Del Laverdure.
"The opportunity comes around once in a lifetime. It is not very often you can not only put your name to such a spectacular facility but also a brand new one.
"We’ve been in business since 1916 and it is always great to give something back to the city and the people that allow us to be Prince George’s community newspaper.
"This is a fantastic legacy for the Citizen, our carriers and staff, past current and future."
Prince George Senior Baseball president Dave Barry also welcomed the news.
"We appreciate the contribution from the Citizen and thank city council for the funding to provide such an excellent facility,” said Barry.

The BCSBA webpage, a BallCharts.com creation, will be instrumental in the distribution of information for everyone involved in Senior Baseball in BC. From the member league to the individual teams, from the players involved to the most commited fans...this is your new starting point.
This webpage will offer information regarding all of the leagues in the Province offering Senior Baseball, including schedules and results, team and player profiles, Championship schedules and stats. This site will also be the one-stop shop for team and league executives looking for information regarding the association.
Already included in the initial launch package is information about all of our leagues and teams, including contact information and individual web pages for the teams. We have also included some of the resources required by team management including the BCSBA Constitution and the Play-Off Models for use in a Round Robin Championship.
As far as a historical look at the BCSBA goes, we have added an initial look into the roots of the association, including Provincial Championship listings from 1978, the first year of the association.

The BCSBA Executive
On behalf of the B.C. Senior Baseball Association, I am delighted to offer a warm welcome to our newly created website. The Senior Association fosters the spirit of competition and fair play with earnest integrity and embraces the game and its players with the utmost respect.
The Senior Association is an operating affiliate of Baseball B.C. and is so designed to include complete communication and directional guidleines from this province's parent baseball organization.
Our Association brings together an impressive cross-section of teams from six regions in the province with the focus on great competition and friendship through baseball. The Senior Association has a rich history of hosting successful provincial championships and the City of Prince George is avidly preparing to grip this hosting opportunity in 2006. The Prince George senior baseball program has galvanized its tournament audience over the years and now has them postured to witness all the excitement in its magnificent new house for baseball.
On behalf of the senior Association membership, I wish to also offer our thanks to Pacific Western Brewing Company for its continued sponsorship support. This partnership is received with great appreciation and the valued support provides our championship teams with opportunities for out of province travel.
Our hope is to promote the delivery of the game in this province and we look forward to expanding our website parcel with informative league, team and player profiles.

The Pacific Western Brewery / Prince George Senior Baseball League is very excited about it's newest addition...a brand new Ball Park in the heart of the city in Carrie Jane Grey Park.
This project, made possible due to civic re-zoning and with the assistance of City Council, is open for business and will play host to the 2006 PWB BCSBA Provincial Championships in August.
Prince George, long the most supportive community in BC Senior Baseball, and hosts of what most say was the most successful national championship ever held at the Senior level (2002), is now ready to continue to grow the game in BC's Northen Capital.
Prince George Senior President Dave Barry, who has been activly involved in the project from the inception, along with key memebers of his executive, has already had some exploratory discussions regarding the possibility of partnering with a local business to sell the naming rights to the new park.
We will post further information regarding the new park as it is made available.
