RMS Chess Club
The educational benefits of playing chess are well documented. Chess has been shown to increase focus, improve memory, boost reasoning and problem-solving skills, and develop creativity. In the fall of 2015, Galen Farrington, proposed making chess and its associated benefits available to the students Ruidoso Middle school. By December of 2015 a group of well over a dozen students were arriving at 7:30 am every Friday morning to learn chess etiquette and strategy, battle with their peers in competitive chess games, and eat doughnuts.
Over the last three years this program has steadily grown in size. Last year the club included a dozen members who traveled around the state competing in tournaments. In the winter of 2017 the club competed in the Northern Schools Chess League, earned the respect of a number of coaches from the league, and walked away with a fourth place trophy. (A very respectable finish for a team competing in the tournament for the first time. This year the club has over 20 members.
The RMS Chess Club meets every Friday from 7:30 to 8:30 in the Library. If you would like to join the club, just show up!!!
