The 2023 BOLD Mudhen Legion Baseball Tournament was cut short by weather. Only a gallant effort by players, coaches, grounds crew, and even umpires allowed us to begin Saturday's games two hours late after an early morning rain. By the end of the day though we were back on schedule after cutting all games to just 6 innings that day. Sunday morning, however, brought more rain, and more delays. First, the 7th place game was cancelled, and then the 5th place game as well. Another great effort by a lot of devoted people saw Lions Memorial Park ready to go for the 2:00PM 3rd place game. This game went into the 6th inning, with NLS leading 3-2 over MIllard Black. That's when the 3rd rain of the weekend deluged the field within minutes. This turned out to be an obstacle that not only had everyone ducking for cover, but would, within minutes, render the field unplayable for the next couple of days.
So, for the 3rd time in the 21 year history of the tournament, there will not be a single champion crowned. In 2012, the championship game between Granite Falls and Chaska was cancelled due to rain. In 2014, only the two Friday night games were played before the Saturday and Sunday sessions were completely washed out.
West St Paul Challenger and St Louis Park were scheduled to meet in this year's championship. The winner would have been only the 3rd team to capture more than one tournament championship. Challenger won their only title in 2007 while St Louis Park won in 2021. Jordan(2004, 2005, 2006, 2008) and Hutchinson(2003, 2013, 2015, 2017) remain the only teams to win here multiple times. Winners of single titles (in order) are Pelican Rapids(2009), BOLD(2010), Centennial(2011), Granite Falls and Chaska(shared 2012), Wayzata(2016), Marshall(2018), Delano(2019), Holy Angels(2020), and New London-Spicer(2022).
