Cougar Boys & Girls Both Win District 19-5A Championships April 5-6, 2011

The Cougar Boys & Girls both won the district championship at River Ridge G.C. on April 5-6, 2011.

The boys shot 300-301 to beat Memorial (300-312) by 11 strokes and beat third place Katy Taylor (308-309) by 16 strokes.  The Cougars were in a fierce battle all day as they started the second day in a tie with Memorial.  District 19-5A is one of the most competitive districts in Region III with many very good teams.  The boys used mental toughness and confidence to come through in the clutch under pressure.

Freshman Connor Black won individual first place with scores of 71-73.  This is Connor's 6th win of the season.  The team championship was not decided until the final group as Connor posted his 73.  Senior Captain Scott Newell won second place with an outstanding 73-73 score to help push the Cougars ahead at the end.  Scott has played in the top five since his Sophomore year and has won three District Team Championships in three years.  Third place went to Memorial's P.J. Collier who shot 75-72.    Other outstanding Cougar scores were Jake Leatherwood (81-75), Dylan Reynolds (77-80), Michael Cotton (79-82), Jack Lee (79-80), Matt McClung (79-81), and Zack Kim (82-81).  The Cougars play at the Region III-5A Championship on April 20-21 at Eagle Pointe GC where they recently won the Region Preview last week with a 300-299 score.  More information with updated tee times and scores can be found on this website under the "Region III" button.

The girls opened up a 29 stroke lead after day 1 on Tuesday.  The girls goal all year was to beat the school record of 310 posted on the same course by the 2007 District Champion Cougars.  The girls shattered that record by 8 strokes to set a new school record of 302.  Junior Abby Newton led the Cougars with a front nine score of 31 on the Ridge course and then shot 33 on the River course to shatter her own school record of 70 by shooting a course record of 64!!!!!!!!!  Abby became the first ever Cougar Girl to win the individual first place championship as she shot 64-73.  The Cougar Girls Team won their 4th Team Championship out of the last 5 years.  Freshman Kennedy Ishee helped the Cougars win and finished in 6th place with scores of 79-85.  Junior Megan Webster finished in 7th place with a 80-86 and Junior Kirsten Hensley finished in 10th place with a 79-89.  Junior Morgan Galloway shot a 89-96.  The top 10 places are awarded "All District" by the District 19-5A coaches.

Katy Taylor came in second place with a 331-346 to edge out Seven Lakes by a single shot.  Katy Taylor will also represent District 19-5A at the Region Championship on April 18-19 at Eagle Pointe.  Caitlin Cassity of Katy HS (151) and Cecile Nordah of Seven Lakes HS (156) will also represent the district as the two top medalists who did not advance on one of the two advancing teams.

On the boys side, besides the Cinco Ranch and Memorial teams, Nick Pierce of Mayde Creek (149) and Juan Espiga of Seven Lakes (151) will represent the district at regionals as the two medalists.

WAY TO GO COUGARS!!!    Way to "Grind It Out" in the clutch and become CHAMPIONS!!
