The Cinco Ranch Boys won the Region III-5A Championship and the CRHS Girls came in as the Runner-ups at Eagle Pointe GC on April 18-21. Both teams now advance to the UIL State Championship in Austin on May 12-13. Only 8 teams make the entire field in Austin as two teams are taken from each of the four regions.
The Girls will be making school history with their first ever State Tournament berth. Junior Abby Newton won the Region Individual First Place Medal to also make school history. Abby shot 77-71 to edge out Clear Lake's Courtney Ferguson by a stroke on the final two holes. No Cougar girl has ever won the Region Championship or been to State. The other team members did a fantastic "Grind It Out" effort to nudge out Clear Springs for the second team State berth. The Cougar Girls shot 330-332 on a very windy day on a very hard golf course. The all underclassmen girl scores for the Cougars were: Junior Megan Webster (84-85), Freshman Kennedy Ishee (82-89), Junior Kirsten Hensley (90-87), and Junior Morgan Galloway (87-98). Way to go Cougar Girls!!
The Boys won the first ever Region III-5A Championship for CRHS. The Boys were Runner-ups in 2007 and have sent two individual medalists in the past to State. The Cougars shot 304-314 to hold off Clements by 4 strokes. The golf course conditions were set up to be a test of inner mental strenth. Freshman Connor Black won the Region Individual First Place Medal by shooting 74-73. He birdied the final hole of the tournament from off of the fringe to edge out fellow Cougar teammate Freshman Michael Cotton by a stroke. Connor won his 7th tournament of the year for the Cougars. Freshman Michael Cotton tied for second with a 74-74 as he played in the final grouping of the day. He too made a clutch putt on his final shot to help hold off the Clements H.S. Rangers. Senior Scott Newell finished in 8th place with a stellar 76-78. He chipped in for par on his final shot of the day to fire up the Cougar crowd and to finish strong for his team. Other key team members for the Cougar winning team were Senior Jake Leatherwood and Junior Dylan Reynolds who have helped the Cougars win all year long. The whole Cougar family and community are so proud of our Cougars for making school history for golf!!!
