Supers Sweep Sunday Twin Bill
Posted June 12, 2011
The Canora Supers hosted a double header at Al Sapieha Field on Sunday June 12. First the Melville Bison came to town for a 3:00 game, and then Willowbrook arrived for a 6:15 game. It was an overcast, dark, cool and all around dreadful day. But in the end, the Supers left the park with smiling faces as they were able to grind out a couple of victories: 6-3 over Melville and 4-3 over Willowbrook.
Against Melville, Darcy Blommaert got his first start on the mound in a few weeks, and pitched very well. After a scoreless first inning, the Bison erupted for 3 runs in the top of the 2nd, but Blommaert tossed 3 more shutout innings and left the game after the 5th inning with a 6-3 lead. He walked 3 Bison hitters and had 5 strikeouts, while picking up his first victory of the season. Derek Palagian pitched the final two innings to pick up the save.
The bottom of the 4th was huge for the Supers as they put up 5 runs to seal the deal. After Ryan Kitchen and Carson Dennis drew walks to start the inning, Adam Chernoff, laid down a sac bunt to move them over. After a sac fly from Greg Andreychuk, Trevor Latham drove home Dennis with a single, and Adam McTavish had an rbi to drive in Darcy Blommaert. The Supers were able to take advantage of a couplewild pitches as well to put a couple more runs on the board. Overall, Trevor Latham had two singles, while Greg Andreychuk, Adam McTavish, and Adam Chernoff each had one single. Travis Fogg had a double, and the Supers were able to draw 7 walks off Bison pitching.
In game two, the Supers were able to produce 4 runs on 8 hits, but it was enough to squeak by the Willowbrook Royals 4-3. Coming into this contest, the Royals had won the last 4 meetings with the Supers, as they swept the season series 3-0 last year, and won 9-2 earlier this year.
Derek Palagian pitched five innings, and picked up his third win of the season. He gave up 3 runs (2 earned), 3 hits, 1 strikeout, while walking 6. He cruised through the first 4 innings, but hit a bump in the road in the 5th as he started to lose command of the strike zone. Up to that point, he had thrown 7 innings on the day, and his tank was running low. Travis Fogg came on in relief of Palagian, and threw the final two innings, surrendering just one single while striking out 2 to pick up the save.
Offensively, Kelly McTavish was 2 for 3 with a double and a run scored to lead the way for the Supers. Trevor Latham, Greg Andreychuk, Graham Lamb, Travis Fogg, Darcy Blommaert, and Carson Dennis each had one base hit for the Supers. Runs were scored by Latham, Andreychuk, Lamb, and Kelly McTavish
With the win, the Supers record improves to 6-2 on the season. The Supers next action is Tuesday, June 14 in Yorkton vs the Jr. Cardinals at 7:30 p.m at Jubilee Park. The next home game is Friday, June 17 vs the Yorkton Yankees. First pitch is 6:15 p.m
